COME ON GUYS lets actually get some movement on this ADHD subject now, its been 30 years since it was recognised, its been long enough now. lets stop hiding away and get motivated and start campaigning. lets inundate parliment with letters, I will write a draft if I have to so all you have to do is sign it and send it. we need every single one of us on this now. I will be the face of it and the advocate for the cause if needs be. I am already contacting MPs, CCG's and NICE and all kinds of organisations. I am already getting in contact with University of Oxford, Kings College London and the Royal College of Psychiatrists about their research and studies and am willing to get on National Television and be interviewed in front of millions of people. I cant do this alone I'm just one man and I need YOUR help. Lets get this sorted for all of us.

Need a little more info. What is it that we r wanting 2 achieve?
What have u written 2 these organizations about?
R u complaining that in some areas of the UK there r no services for adults with adhd
or that some gps (like mine) have vaguely heard of ADHD but believe it's a childhood disorder
if u r campaigning for doctors to be trained in mental health disorders then I'm interested
What exactly is your aim?

I am in the early stages of this but am trying to first of all get all relevant facts and figures straight. Hopefully fingers crossed some of the people from these Unis who authored these studies will allow me to mention them and talk to me more. This will hopefully give some clout to what I say. I have a family member helping with this but there is just the two of us and these letters need to be worded correctly so we are doing what we can. As for the goals here:
1: I want to avoid "complaining" people don't seem so responsive to it. 2: Awareness needs to be raised about the condition, benefits of helping people (there are loads) what it actually is, stuff like that 3: I would like ideally for the ADHD patients that are in a position to do so to be involved in helping the "professionals" learn and understand better what is going on in the ADHD mind. those like myself who have been learning about this and living this for 30+ years really can help. I wish I could help more people as I really genuine do understand the whole package from brain science to behavioural and environmental and how it all links together. 4: Remove the stigma from stimulant medication that we need and get people to realise that it REDUCES a lot of what doctors are afraid of like addiction and substance abuse. And make people more open minded and willing to study what are considered risky drugs and actually do their research and look at evidence (thats piling up by the way) instead of snapping back to the status quo for no logical reason.
sorry if thats a bit full on its hard to explain things in an online message. The main point is really that if and when this all comes into public mainstream I need people to stand by me if that time comes (If you believe in what Im saying). This is how recognition and treatment of all disorders comes about, people stand together and bring it into the limelight. remember ADHD has only just been recognised in the 90's so we're still in the early stages here, thats why theres nothing happening. We are still in the - Establishment is scared so just ignores it - stage. Im just one man with one voice but ill do whatever I can.

We could meet up. We could send people letters. All of this has been done before, though, hasn't it? The simple truth is, nobody gives a shit. I don't care about your cough, you don't care about my cold and absolutely no one cares about ADHD. However! Is it possible, that, all this time, we've just been thinking too small? Perhaps what we really need is a film. A movie. A blockbuster. A Hollywood blockbuster that helps the masses understand that ADHD has some benefits. Helps them understand we're not massive plebs who love choking down amphetamines. Help them understand we're not here to bleat about our difficulties. Help them understand we have utility in this world. Perhaps from this position of strength, the necessary 'tools' will simply be made available? What might be possible if people start to believe that it's cool to have ADHD?

I get exactly what you are saying. I don think creating a film is quite realistic at the moment. I do believe that a bigger impact needs to be made. The keys to getting movement on ADHD are: 1: to get the facts straight. Its important we must talk in terms of fact or known accepted research. having a wild unstructured ADHD rant will not help. 2: To show the benefits for non ADHD people as a result of better treatment and services. people need a reason to help us, people are selfish unfortunately and so there must be some incentive for them. they dont seem to get spoken about but at the estimated number of sufferers in the uk the benefit to the greater population and society would be huge, so we actually do have these benefits to offer. think about it, roughly 5% of population has ADHD (thats a very conservative estimate) so about 3,000,000 people. so thats 3,000,000 people being more profitable at their jobs, not having time off, less people on benefits so more money saved, many many less people in jail, less crime, less drug addiction, better social structure as people learn to cope with each other, better understanding and connection with young people, better educated population due to increase in grades, even more profit for pharma companies, I could go on and on. so if we can just make people see that it will help lots of people everywhere. This IS the most common disorder and sorting it out should be a priority.
Also I do not think ADHD is cool and think it would be damaging to us all and be a block to everything if people began thinking it was cool. I has ruined my life for sure so not cool. apologies if you disagree.

The APPG on ADHD has had a few meetings now, including one with the Mental Health Secretary.
The last one was about Criminal Justice and had the Secretary of State for Justice there.
The next one is in November. There has already been a letter-writing campaign to MPs.
Jo Platt MP is chair. Carrie Grant and her daughter have spoken at it. Daniel Johnson MSP has ADHD
and is vocal about it and lack of services in the Scottish Parliament. All are active on Twitter.
There are currently no statistics gathered by the NHS about what services are offered or how many
people are diagnosed with ADHD and I think there was an agreement by the government to gather them.
There was a survey of ADHD services by Exeter University recently and should be completed by the end of the year.
There's also Attention UK attentionuk.org/ which is run by someone who was on the panel to update the NICE Guidelines
on ADHD. There's a large campaigning community on Twitter too.

Thanks! That's a very good summary and the Attention UK which seems very good and I hadn't heard of before. Have things progressed since you wrote this post? And who are some of the campaigners on Twitter? Thanks again! Jeff
