Hey
So where to begin it might be a long story.....
I'm 37 now and I have always had a feeling that something isn't quite right and your slightly different to other people but you never know why especially in that I always seem to make more mistakes than other people at work.
I went through school with no problem apart from shocking handwritting but as a teenager started to suffer with muscle problems and only now am I been investigated for rare muscle problems which I believe is dopa responsive dystonia so basically I have a lack of Dopamine.
I don't think it was until I started working even Saturday jobs as a teenager and then full time employment that I realised I used to always make unexplained errors that I had no idea I had made luckily I work hard though and get on well with everyone so people just brush it off. I did find new jobs hard though and always felt like I was failing at them and wanting to leave luckily the recession hit 10+ years ago and there were no jobs about so I had to stick it out. I have now been in the same type of job job for 15 years with a number of promotions (although my inerviews are always a car crash) so I have my routine and know what I am doing (although I organise myself differently to other people) so I don't have to many issues but people laugh at how unorganised I am and how I always find short cuts, never follow all the procedures etc
I would say over the last few years as my mystery muscle issue has progressed my attention span at work has got shorter for me to concentrate I have to be really busy or be involved in a very big exciting project but small day to day stuff doesn't interest me and I prob spend more time on the internet than working (like now!) or walking around I always find an excuses to make a brew, go to the photocopier, I never email people I always prefer to go and speak to people face to face.
I also have a 7 year old son who I think also has the mystery muscle problem and the pediatrican wants to test him for autism, dyspraxia etc I wasn't to sure about the autism and thought it was something else. I started researching into things and found out that lack of dopamine can be linked to ADHD, Bingo!!
So here I am and I don't know if it's just because of the lack of dopamine that causes our issues or if we also have ADHD on top of that.
I will warn you in advance I am liley to have loads of questions!

I totally agree with the lack of available dopamine (it could be that we have enough dopamine but our receptors gobble it up too fast)
Dopamine is not only the feel good hormone but is needed to make the neurotransmitter noradrenalin
Without noradrenalin electrical signals can't get past the synapses
I think the electric builds up and forks out like lightning trying to find an alternative route
Hence our nonlinear way of thinking and our busy minds
I think this must us up a lot of energy hence why we have poor mental stamina
The part of our brain that has a bountiful supply of dopamine is the reward centre
And so I think that's how we've learned to cope
If we need to do something there needs to be a reward so we can tap in to that supply
I could bore u 4 ages with my theories but for me there is a flaw to my theory
If I have a shortage of available dopamine, the feel good hormone, why am I nearly always happy???
I'm thinking the shortage is only in parts of the brain
Maybe it's in different parts for different people?
Sorry 2 bore u I find it fascinating

I find it fascinating as well all I do is read books on neuromuscular diseases and neurotransmitters, is this hyperfocus maybe? I could write a PhD on it the way I am going and I even seem to know more than my GP and neurologist!
So I think my issue is with the area of the brain called the base ganglia something in there is not converting my amino acids into dopamine. Where as people with Parkinsons they start to leak dopamine as they get older from some type of vein (I can't remember the name Niaga or something.
I can't believe there are no posts on here about the suppliment Dopa Mucana this stuff has been magic for me as it contains L-Dopa which crosses the blood/brain barrier and makes dopamine. I got some off amazon and took one every day for a week and I was high as a kite no longer tired and I felt like I could run a marathon every day! also all my muscles issues magically got better. There seems to be quite a craze about it people just take it as a happy pill just to perk them up! especially good for students at exam time etc all though I since found out that the stuff off amazon is a really high dose so not surprised I was bouncing around like an idiot.
I wrote to the consultant to tell him I had managed to accidentally cure myself and he rang me back the next day and said he would put me on a 3 week trial of L-Dopa I am interested to see if my mood/alertness also gets better with time.
I do wonder if it's possible to show signs of ADHD but not actually have it for example a person with Cerebral Palsy might have all the symptoms of Dyspraxia but they can't call it Dyspraxia because they have another movement disorder. So is my overarching medical issue causing some mild symptoms of ADHD but it's not just ADHD. For example I struggle to sit at a desk for long time and need to walk about but that might be more to do with the fact I have restless legs and my muscles ache. Where as people with ADHD don't necessarly have muscles issues so like you say maybe different people do have issues with different areas of the brain.
What I don't get is that the neurologist said when I go on L-Dopa you might start with compulsive behaviours but since I started taking the Mucana I feel this side of things has actually got better which seems strange, maybe I just feel generally happier now so I don't need to go looking for the dopamine rush who knows.
Also how much can you say things are because of your ADHD and how much is just personality as we are all different but that's a whole other conversation.
