I was diagnosed with ADHD about three months ago. I ended up going private as the NHS ADHD service in my area was shut due to covid. The psychiatrist put me on 40mg Equaysm XL a day, but it gave me horrible anxiety. Some days I felt fine, others I was shaking and felt like I was going to be sick and so worried I couldn't concentrate on anything anyways.
When I asked her about it she said any ADHD medication I could take would have the exact same side effects, that I just need to get used to it. Then she raised my dose to 40mg as I said I was still struggling with concentration. Needless to say the anxiety has gotten worse.
Is this true? I'm 23 years old and struggled all through school. If it is I'll really be devistated, I just want something that will work. Please share your experiences on different medications and if they were different! Do you have any recommendations of what might work for me of Equasym doesn't?

Not all ADHD meds are the same. They don't even have the same effects in everyone.
Even different formulations and brands of the same drug can have different effects.
Methylphenidate and dexamfetamine (the 2 stimulants) work in different ways.
Some people get anxious on stimulants and some people find it reduces their anxiety.
If you try lisdexamfetamine (long acting pro-drug) or dexamfetamine IR you may experience
a totally different effect than with mph. There's also atomoxitine, which is not a stimulant,
and I know a lot of people who love it, however, unpleasant side-effects are more common
than with stimulants.
You're paying this psychiatrist - they don't seem to know their stuff, so get another (good) one!
