First post so please excuse if the formatting is weird.
I'm 24, and have just started the process of diagnosis. I've had a phone conversation with my GP who agrees I should be referred, and have filled in the self-report scale symptom checklist. I'm now waiting for the referral.
I'm concerned that as I have previously disclosed a history of drug use (last used 2 years ago, and it was not amphetamines) that I may not be approved for medication.
Does anyone have experience with this? It was during university and it was not a physically addictive drug so when I decided to stop, I have not dabbled since and have cut out the people in my life who were still using it.

Hey mate I have also been experiencing a similar issue. I have struggled over the past 2 years with impulsivity and depression symptoms of which I would self medicate alot of the time with drugs. only to be diagnosed this year with combined subtype adhd (26 years of age) , in a much better place now gladly, and I am waiting to start medication. But the GPS are reluctant for me to be prescribed stimulants because of my history of drug use.So can't help but think I will be prescribed a non stimulant which is less effective. Don't know if you can relate to any of this at all?

I have always disclosed my historic drug use including more recent marijuana. They always remind me to steer clear of it now but not had issue with prescriptions of adhd meds.

That's good to know thankyou. They recommended to start me on Amoxotine. Have you any experiences of that?

Sorry to jump on, only just signed up. But I was a heavy drug user, although clean for many years now, and I admitted this from day one (where would lying have got me) and I wasn't restricted with medication at all. In fact the pattern of that behaviour, along with other things, just indicated how ill I had become.

That's good to know I just hope that the fwct I have abused substances in the past will not restrict my access to more medication if you follow?

I suspect that knowledge of your behaviours from previous drugs help them work out what might work better for you. This is purely anecdotal but I confessed to choosing a certain drug recreationally and the first set I was prescribed was from the family of it’s base ingredient. This didn’t really work for me and I have been offered another which I have to say, I was reluctant to try after reading about it but I’m glad I did as this fits my other medication perfectly and is really helping after just a week. Be honest about how the meds are and try not to have expectations. If you’re honest with how they affect you, they will know if it’s right or whether to try another. It may take a few goes before you find what works. But hopefully it won’t be long
