I hope some of yous might be able to help me here. Especially if you know anything about Derbyshire/Sheffield/Scotland.
I got diagnosed last week on by a consultant on Psychiatry-UK after my (new) GP in Scotland was third health professional to ask that within the year. The reason they are asking I presume, is because I have had drug problems with stimulants and the way I have been using has always been on-and-off, the "on" being when I have responsibilities and targets at university. Self-medicating basically, which I agree with - it's never been a social thing.
This is my fourth university. I'm on a tour at the moment. I'm still struggling, but I'm hopeful it will work out this year.
The thing is though... I am in Scotland. RtC does not exist here but the Doctor who I really wanted to see had *one* spot avaliable in the next couple of months (and who is an NHS Consultant and addiction specialist and seems really highly acclaimed, so I felt by going through him will validate any decision he made and I made myself accountable by bringing up the drugs situation to him) eventually I thought "sod it, I'll just pay for the private consulation". I end up having the consulation and he tells me I defo have ADHD. I've not had the report back yet, but I think it'll be quite firm.
He also told me given my financial situation that I should register back in England and ask for RtC to continue treatment. This seems logical to me. I do have the option of doing this in a legal way, as being a uni student I have two addresses. Granted, I'll be in Scotland most of the time, but everything is remote anyway atm.
I've found a GP (the joy of "Spotted" FB groups) that has referred and helped people with Adult ADHD before and has good comments, so I'm going to ask for him. I still have a lot of anxiety about signing up and having to explain and request this RtC thing though. It feels like the patient shouldn't be the ones saying "oh no, you don't need to request funding!, just do this:", I can see why he would raise an eye especially not knowing me and seeing my history of drug abuse. I suppose he cannot really argue with a need to refer me, given I've been diagnosed by a highly-acclaimed specialist who will send him the report, so as long as he accepts that, he surely, under RtC has to refer me? Even if it does look a bit bizarre being referred to a place where I know that I have already received a diagnosis (by an NHS Consultant!). P-UK have said to me they'll just accept the initial private assessment I had, but maybe a second opinion could be done once it's 'officially' on the NHS pathway? Would my GP prefer that?
I'm signing up to the practice today. If you've any comments, suggestions, or tips on how to navigate this I'd be appreciative. I know GPs can be reluctant/confused about this RtC thing, then start getting involved with the CCG which causes massive delays as they do not have to put in or request an IRF.
My questions are basically anything you can help with in the above or tips but for the purpose of TL;DR
How did you get on with RtC?
How do I present or introduce RtC to a GP I've never seen before? He's probably wise enough to realise why I've come to an English GP (which is my right, but does look fishy)
I've been diagnosed privately by a NHS Psychiasrist (last week) on PUK. This surely puts my GP in a position where he can't really say "well, I don't think you have ADHD."
I guess my request for referred is therefore more for my continued treatment, rather than an an assessment and treatment (give P-UK will take the "private" assessment I did and accept that).
Does anyone know much about the local services for an assessment in Derbyshire? I believe it's outsourced to Sheffield. Is this currently open with Coronavirus restrictions? If I can point out how/the wait times are here, it'll surely strengthen my case for him to just refer my treatment to PUK.
Thanks
