Hi all, my 7 year old son has recently been diagnosed with ADHD via a private clinic as we couldn't keep waiting for CAMHS. We is currently taking 10mgs of methylphenidate 3x daily and we have really noticed an improvement. We transferred care to CAMHS and had our first apt with a CAMHS psychiatrist yesterday. She told us that it is in the NICE guidelines not to prescribe medication for home - all CAMHS across the country only prescribe for school days. He is not meant to take medication on weekends or school holidays. Do others also have this experience? I have read the NICE guidelines and there is no mention of this. I know we need to keep an eye on his weight, height, heart etc, which we are doing, but there are no contra-indications to suggest that he needs such regular treatment breaks. I've asked the psych to send me the NICE guidelines that she was referring to, but she says she doesn't have time....I'd love to hear others experiences if possible. Many thanks, Kathryn

Hi I suspect the CAMHS professional believes she has read this but does not have time to search for it. From reading lots on ADHD and medication since my son was diagnosed many teenagers only take the medication when at school to help their concentration and engagement but choose not to take it at the weekends. I suppose home life does not demand the same level of concentration that school does and parents like us who recognise our childs difficulties are around to support them in a way they wouldn't have at school. The medication only works when active and weekend breaks should not disrupt their overall response to medication. After a more settled week at school maybe the weekends might feel easier so I think it's worth giving it a try and then talk to them if your son struggles at weekends.

My son as been on quite a few medications. If my son has a break from medication home life is really hard . For u to have the best relationship with your child they need to be settled on medication . Am new on here an dont no how things work on here but this is what I think but do speak to the doctor first. Chin up stay strong x

I’ve just posted on another similar topic but feel maybe it could be of help to you too - my nephew recently took a genetic test. It’s help to find the right mediation and dosage for him. It’s huge in America, they sell it here too. The company is called myogenes. I can only speak from experience - it’s really really helped my nephew. It took us a long time to discover it with lots of medications tried but we finally found out about the test. It’s worth looking into it
