What's the point? It's a battle to get one in the NHS system. Private costs and probably needs multiple sessions to dx only to find your practise doesn't go for joint care.
So what's the point?

Clarification.
I've tried about 5 years ago. I'm not depressed but likely adhd according to gp and depression clinic who did a telephone consult with me.
After that I gave up.
To be fair the crisis leading to my gp consult passed and I thought I didn't have any real adhd issues.
A recent read of the conversation article by two adhd researchers with adhd opened my eyes. It seems whether they're actually adhd symptoms or comorbidities it's actually right through who I am and how I interact.
But that leaves me wondering why bother? What can a dx and treatment do for me?

It can give you a new perspective, change your life for the better, and offer you control you don't know you are capable of possessing. I would keep chasing it, and demand you are referred to an ADHD specialist to get tested and treated. If you keep the defeatist attitude and give up then you are only affecting yourself: no one else.

You are right. I have loads of points rattling around my head but thinking about how they all sound it is pure defeatism. I'm determined about so many things but the important ones I guess. Here in the UK I think with most medical matters you have to fight to be heard and treated. I'm just not sure how to manage this fight. Pathetic really

I understand where you are coming from buddy, sometimes it can feel like the deck is stacked against you.
Took me to the age of 36 to apply for NHS assessment. That was last July. I was assessed in October, diagnosed in November. Treatment began then. My life has changed in so many ways for the better I can't even begin to explain to you.
If you genuinely feel you have ADHD, it's absolutely worth the pain of advocating for yourself and insisting on a referral from your GP. That gets the ball rolling for you at the very least. Good luck!
