Hi I've recently been diagnosed with adhd (18/18 symptoms) I'm waiting to be prescribed medication. I'm currently in recovery I'm 3 and a half years clean. I'm really struggling at the moment, I'm also a bit apprehensive of taking adhd medication however Ive decided that I'm going ahead with it. I'm just wondering if there's anyone else who is in recovery who has experience with taking adhd meds.
Thanks
Jamie

Thanks Jamie I cannot talk about dealing with addiction, but this is something to bring up to your psychiatrist regarding your medication that you have had addiction in the past. It's important to say because a stimulant may induce that addiction again depending on what it is and how it interacts with your brain chemistry. Keep in mind, not all ADHD medications are stimulants and have shown to be effective treatments.
This is a conversation to have with your psychiatrist who can talk through what is the most appropriate treatment. Please don't be bummed out if the medication doesn't work first time, because all that means is you just need to look toward a different medication or a different solution.
I hope that your journey goes well, I really do.

A lot of people with ADHD have addiction issues and a good psychiatrist won't be phased.
There's a lot of research suggesting that ADHD meds reduce the urge to self-medicate.
Your psychiatrist should go through all the options with you.
