Hi everyone,
I'm a 28 year old woman who has lately begun to realise/suspect that a lot of the issues I've been dealing with point towards ADHD. I did some research on the options in the UK and decided that the best one for me would be getting referred for an ADHD assessment with ADHD360, via my GP using the "right to choose" route.
I had my appointment with my GP today and it was very disappointing. She asked about my symptoms but kept repeating that ADHD is usually diagnosed in childhood (although she didn't say I couldn't have it) and seemed to have no clue about "Right to Choose". I explained it to her as best I could based on the research I've done but she was insistent that the only thing she could do was refer me to the "Access team", and that only they would be able to refer me on anywhere.
Has anyone faced similar obstacles or been referred on to an "Access team" and then onto a right to choose provider? I'm not sure what I should do next - whether I wait for the access team referral and then try to get them to refer me to ADHD 360 or try to get an appointment with another GP.

My GP referred me to the local NHS ADHD service without any problems with no need for access teams so I would think about changing GP's to one who takes adult ADHD more seriously.

That's good to know. How was your experience with NHS services? I'm worried about the crazy long waiting times so was keen to go with a private service through "right to choose" but now I'm wondering if it might be worth it to just pay and go private for the assessment as it seems the NHS has a lot of hoops to jump through.

I've been referred before to the NHS service and they were very good and recommended my GP prescribed me Concerta XL (I initially went private but I had to have a heart ECG which came back slightly abnormal so my GP at the time wouldn't prescribe meds). I later got a GP in Wigan to prescribe Concerta XL. I have been told my current GP won't prescribe meds so I am on a 2 year NHS waiting list to get treated and hopefully the specialist in Haydock Merseyside will be able to prescribe meds.
