this a supplement of the Essential Amino Acid, Phenylalanine. the body can use it to make Dopamine & Nor-Adrenaline, through this chain of reactions. Phenylalanine = Tyrosine = L-Dopa = Dopamine = Nor-Adrenaline the theory is, that if people with ADHD don't have enough Dopamine & nor-adrenaline, then if they take supplements, these levels will increase. however, it's not as straight forward as that. these essential amino acids are available in lots of normal foods, especially cheese and dairy products, if you don't eat dairy and want to try supplements, the best one to try is Tyrosine, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrosinehope that's a help! ;D -matt

Yeah, that is really useful thanks! (But also a lot to take in..)
If anything it's made me realise that I should start paying more attention to my diet.
What do you make of this quote from the wikipedia page?
Is L-Dopa a more effective supplement? Do you take any supplements? Are these kind of things available in Holland and Barrett and the like?
Jeff.

Which type are you? lol www.depressionforums.org/forums/Types-Styles-Adhd-t1291.htmlPiglet and Rabbit types..... QUOTE (for each one) In this type of ADHD some stimulants, and too much use of L-Tyrosine to increase dopamine production can actually make the problem of over-focus worse. So be careful. QUOTE

this is a link to an earlier thread where i mentioned some of the things i take!... ;D aadduk.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=nonmedicinal&thread=462&page=1i have taken protein/amino acid supplements for sports, and i did a lot of research back then. -honestly jeff, if you eat meat & dairy you should not have a problem with too little amino acids. the reason i didn't go into my reasoning in the last post, was because i thought it was best to avoid giving a big long reply. ;D your body makes Dopamine using the process i mentioned earlier: Phenylalanine = Tyrosine = L-Dopa = Dopamine so because dopamine's the target, the most efficient thing to supplement with, is the closest molecule, we could supplement with dopamine directly, but dopamine doesn't pass through the blood/brain barrier, which makes it useless as a suplement. we could supplement from the other end, with Phenylalanine, but it is the furthest from the target, so the body has to put a lot of work in to convert it to dopamine, and is not suitable for some people, especially those with PKU. so the choice is, tyrosine or L-dopa, -L-dopa is the most potent & direct route, but has LOTS of potential side effects, and in my opinion, isn't worth the risk. -tyrosine has lots of good points, and no side effects, so i'd recommend it as it's the safest option. i'm comming back with a second part to this tomorrow, as i'm sleepy! ;D Zzzzzzz
