Hi Jeff, They are all now trying to be Foundation Trusts and this is what the Dept of Health says about FT's: NHS foundation trusts (often referred to as foundation hospitals) are at the cutting edge of the Government's commitment to the decentralisation of public services and the creation of a patient-led NHS. NHS foundation trusts are a new type of NHS trust in England. They have been created to devolve decision-making from central government control to local organisations and communities, so they are more responsive to the needs and wishes of their local people. The introduction of NHS foundation trusts represents a profound change in the history of the NHS and the way in which hospital services are managed and provided. www.dh.gov.uk/en/Healthcare/Secondarycare/NHSfoundationtrust/DH_072543Since I tend to be a bit cynical, I think all the trust's are eager to become FT's because it probably actually means less patient involvement. And before anyone starts explaining that the public can become involved in their Foundation Trust as governors etc., I'm going to point out that the board meetings for some FT's are now being held in private. Here's an example: www.tamesidehospital.nhs.uk/pages/trustboardmeetings.aspI think that Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust Board of Directors meet in private And although they've published the minutes online, minutes are only doctored versions of what was really said. And here's an article published 2 July 2009 in Health Service Journal www.hsj.co.uk/news/acute-care/foundation-trust-brand-carries-can-for-blunders/5003305.articleAs background information, I've attached an interesting document about whether meetings should be held in public or privately in Worcestershire Attachments:

Once again, the closed meetings system is in place. That's democracy for you..
