Hi peeps, I got a phone call from a guy in Aberdeen the other day asking if I could offer him any sort of help. His son was diagnosed ADHD when he was younger but has now had his meds took off him. Not quite sure how long his son has been without them but he apparantly doesnt cope very well. Anyway, the guy was asking if I knew any information regarding getting his son medication. Aberdeen wont entertain the idea anymore apparantly and I think what he needs is to get sent somewhere else, or go somewhere else with the Aberdeen Health Board paying the bill. Any ideas anyone? I tried to get him to call Gordon Brown as he at least has some knowledge about all this but for some reason he doesnt seem to be contactable recently. Well he hasnt returned any of my messages anyway. I should really be telling him to phone patient services, shouldnt I? See what I mean about the godly stuff, Im just a wee muppet that blundered into the right path and got lucky Thank f**k is all I can say

sorry madscot, i don't know any good advice either, things seem really crappy for ADHD in Scotland!...
-all i can think of is that he writes to his MP, MSP etc... Maybe the headteacher of the boy's school could get involved and write letters too, or at least co-sign the letters that the dad sends. surely the teachers would have noticed a change in the boy's behaviour & concentration.
why was the medication withdrawn from the child in the first place?... if it was by the childs GP, perhaps you could write to the origional prescribing psychiatrist telling him what's happened.
i think what you need is something concrete, like a letter from the kid's GP saying, "i'm no longer happy to continue prescribing because of..." or from the health board saying "because of funding restrictions we will no longer be funding ADHD medications for children..."
-if you can actually get some kind of written evidence, then you can start making official complaints!
anyway, i wish i knew more about the scottish situation so i could help you.
good luck with it! -matt

Emm sorry should have explained this a little better. He is 32 and he was being prescribed them by the same person since he was younger but that person no longer works there and no one is willing to prescribe them to him. Now his Dad is trying to sort the mess out and no one seems to be able to give him any good advice. I know that feeling.

he should write to the GPs office asking for a written explanation of why they will no longer prescribe. then he probably needs to move GPs and find one that wants to help, maybe he could write to a few different surgeries asking if they'll be happy to take him on. as GPs get paid by the number of patients they have, i'm sure lots will be happy to sign him up! ;D

Hi madscot, I'm really sorry I didn't see this earlier. If the trust is refusing to continue his treatment, or are making it very difficult for him to access treatment, then they are potentially in breach of the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 which is a very serious matter. He needs to go to his GP and sweetly say that. Here is a link to the relevant information on the Scottish Government's website: www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/People/Equality/disability/publicsectorduty

Hi all Aren't us Scots good at oppressing ourselves? Sorry for sounding a bit dumb, but Ive stumbled on the word 'advocacy'. What is advocacy and can it help us folks? More specifically for your chap in Aberdeen heres a link. www.advocacy.org.uk/index.shtmlfreewill
