Hi, thought it was time I told you about my eldest daughter. I should really giver her a name to make it easier like, I can think of many but MM (for motor mouth) will do. For a 12 year old she makes life very stressful most of the time. She's like Zippy but unfortunately without the zip. Mum is always being drawn into arguments with her. When she is on one, words of wisdom and reason are better offered to the fish. She's not hyper but can't stay still and fidgets when you are trying to talk to her. She has had problems throughout infant and junior school, mainly for being a chatterbox or not listening. She was punished and made to stand facing the wall in the playground every playtime all week for drawing on someone’s back with a white board pen whilst sitting on the carpet. She didn't know she had done it and the school would not believe it was down to her fidgeting and ignored our objections. We tried everything to prove it was unintentional. It was made worse because she got on the wrong side of the deputy head master (and a couple of other teachers) because he misread her fidgety and 'ask first think later' behaviour as a challenge to his authority. Every teacher has commented on her fidgeting and excessive talking. Her grades at junior school were average.
She has always been a very active and sporty girl. She does Ju-Jitsu and also teaches it to the younger kids.
Her first year at secondary school started off very promising. All the teachers were giving her praise. She helped the teachers and other pupils at every opportunity and was keen to do some of the after school clubs. Her expected grades were high. She was too nice and it wasn't long before she was being bullied. She even got into a couple of fights. We told school of our concerns on numerous occasions. She has had a lot of social problems and the teacher suggested she might have Aspergers because she thought her grades were too good for ADHD. We were called into school toward the end of the year because of her falling grades. Her enthusiasm has been replaced by 'its boring', 'the teacher is horrible', 'I don't get it'. She's been disciplined for missing a couple of PD groups because they are 'a waste of time' and she doesn't like the teacher. But she has been doing really well in science - the teacher even gave her paperclips to mess with during the lesson (he seemed to understand her).
We reported out concerns to CAMHS and they sent an educational psychologist to asses her - He says she has a poor working memory (7 years) and there is concern for some of the problems she has educationally and socially. Strangely enough, like her sister, she scored very high for her reasoning (16 years).
She has just started year 8 and although she is in the top set for science she has been moved down to sets 2 & 3 for everything else. She doesn't like science anymore because she doesn't like the teacher and she doesn't feel like she is learning anything.
I’d have expected CAMHS to have run a few tests on her by now as she is the right age for their expertise but it would seem that they want to talk to us before they do anything. I guess she hasn’t failed enough at school to warrant any further investigation (sorry, getting sinical).
