im still abit fuzzy on the area. how much does it cost for a diagnosis from the nhs? or does it cost anything? the reason i ask is why doctors just dont refer you straight to a psych if you think there is something wrong with yourself. or is it about the doctors reputation and he/she not willing to give you a referal just because you say you cant concentrate? i understand the long wait but i dont understand the hassle, i mean what has the doctor got to lose?

It costs no money at all!... -although it might cost you a load of hassle! ;D
I agree, you should just be referred straight to a psychiatrist, the reason they don't is that the NHS is the largest organisation in Europe, and is prevented from doing a quick and efficient job by mountains of bureaucracy!!!
Anyone (in England) who walks into their GPs office and says "Good morning doctor, i think i have ADHD, and i'd like you please, to refer me to someone who can diagnose ADHD..." should be put on the path to seeing a specialist.
if this doesn't happen, tell the admin on this forum and annie will headbutt the GP for you!

This is an issue we had raised in the House of Commons last year.
The costs of providing special educational needs The costs of keeping a young offender The costs as to assessing, diagnosing and treating ADHD
That if ADHD is diagnosed at an early age and treated (not just with medications) and that the appropriate education to their needs is provided then it may well reduce the Criminal Justice Budget on, Court Costs, Legal Assistance, Expert Witness Reports, Youth Offending Teams, Probation Services and costs of detainment.
We are not saying that everyone with ADHD gets into trouble with the law, but the numbers are high that are entering our CJS, therefore the costs to assess, diagnose and treat are less than the costs to detain a child or young person that needs help, not prison. This should be a Health Approach not Criminal Approach!
Sorry, will get off my soap box now.

TY Roland, I was starting to feel rather faint as scared of heights lol
This subject I am rather passionate about as far too many young lives are wasted by so called experts who know nothing of the subject but yet make decisions on 'What's Best' for young people----ye right!

It costs no money at all!... -although it might cost you a load of hassle! ;D you know i've actually never officially been diagnosed? my psychiatrist last year refused to do it - said it had to be done by a certain specialist, even though he knew for a fact i had it, and then said he didn't want to put the referral through for me because what was the point? i'm living my life so who cares? i said well yeah except it'd be nice to know where all these things are coming from and accept myself and have an explanation for people who don't get it, etc. and he just stared at me blankly, uncomprehending, and said 'well i suppose i COULD send you for tests to have an official diagnosis made, but it costs the nhs a lot and you'll have to go to another city for it' blah blah and i was like...you're a psychiatrist, why do i need to take tests! can't you just tell me!? it was madness. he kept saying yes he believed it did sound like i did but he wasn't the one to say so. i was like...what is that even supposed to mean!? so i came out of the appt with my husband going 'what did he say?' and i was like 'i have no idea!!'
