I went back to the doctor today to tell him the citalopram he put me on and the 'anxiety' dx was a load of rubbish, he just wanted to put me on a higher dose and insist he was right but after some persistant persuasion he's referring me to the local mental health team. Are they likely to be of any help or just as useless as the doctor afraid to believe anything out of their confort zone, anyone had any experience with local mental health teams? Would they know much about ADHD and be willing to refer me? All this is so difficult to deal with, grrr..

hi cheath, i would possibly err on the side of caution and expect them not to have experience and with that in mind, make sure you go armed with as much written info as you possibly can, including a list of symptoms that you feel are relevant and the nice guidelines as well as anything and everything you think might prove helpful.
i think there will be much better advice from some of the others, cos i didnt go down this route so cant really speak from any personal experience
good luck, though and dont let them fob you off x

hey cheath, -it's not about them being willing to refer you, you have a right to be referred!
i had to go and see the local MHT people, and it was a woman who'd never dealt with an adult with ADHD before, and didn't seem like she believed me, i told her all the trouble i'd had throughout my life and she said "i don't know why you have to medicalise the problem, everyone finds it hard to concentrate sometimes" so i said "it's an internationally recognised medical condition, and i need to be referred to someone who has the expertise to diagnose me" so she said ok, and referred me! ;D
they'll probably offer you counselling, antidepressants, and lots of stuff you don't need! -but you should 100% get a referral, as long as you don't let them sidetrack you

My local MHT lady had no idea about my possible issues... I was given 4 doses of 50%CBT at christmas 2008. In march I saw a pyschiatrist (who was a respectable person, not arrogant at all lol) In MAY I had 2 psychotherapy appointments about 3 weeks apart. On the 2nd one, I made a case which was simply " I believe I have adhd, I don't think talking is going to work because apart from chronic procrastination and symptoms of adhd/depression, stress, anxiety, some minor OCD, handwriting pains, cluttering, blah blah, I did not have a bad time at home or such.. Also found out very recently - that I have testosterone levels low enough to cause some of the symptoms of the aforementioned issues, although correctly diagnosed ADHD can be seen by scanning the brain etc with different technologies. Anyway, where was I......... ?? Oh 2nd visit psychotherapist - he basically agreed that there was no point talking again until I went to see an "adult adhd specialist". Working on that on this tuesday (29 sep) but I am out of area for maudsley groan so I need to see my options on here once I have done my post rounds. Since then, nothing has changed, just like it has not changed in the last well years....... Anti depressants did nothing for me tried citalopram, prozac(fluoxetine ) 20 and 40mg. Coming off them showed zero issues so it seems my brain did not even develop a need for them, hence no tapering off the drug. Perhaps, one day, anxiety will be treatable with something that correctly targets it. How can anyone do anything consistent when there is background concerns? I think it all ties in but the specialists will have to deal with it.

Hi I went down this route and the MHT at Rotherham were pretty good - I was thoroughly put through a huge question and answer session which ran through the major symptoms of every mental health problem they could think of - then I was referred to the specialist.
The first person I saw was a junior recently out of med school which I think helped as he seemed quite open minded to it.
Also - remind them of the NICE guidelines too.
