Take part in research of 'Women seeking a diagnosis of ADHD'
My name is Samantha Walsh, I'm a postgraduate student at the University of Glasgow, completing a masters in psychology. This research project is being conducted as part of my dissertation and has been granted full ethical approval from the University of Glasgow board of ethics. This project is not funded.
Many people think only boys and men experience ADHD, however more and more women and non-binary people are being diagnosed or seeking diagnosis. This study aims to understand what the process of receiving an ADHD diagnosis is like for women and non-binary people and will ask participants to describe their diagnostic journey. I am interested in hearing your stories and understanding your experience of diagnosis and any factors that helped or hindered you. The aim of this study is to centre the voices of women with ADHD in research to facilitate better future processes for diagnosis as, despite a recognised under-diagnosis in girls and women there is very little research to understand why this is happening.
You will be asked to take part in a one-to-one interview with me, conducted and recorded via Zoom. The session will last approximately 1hr; 45 minutes for the interview and time either side to explain the process and answer any questions you may have. Prior to taking part you will be sent a list of the interview questions to ensure you are happy discussing those topics. You have the right to skip questions or terminate the interview at any point without question.
Interviews will be analysed to identify common themes raised by participants to build a generalised view of women's experiences of diagnosis.
To be eligible to take part in this study you must be:
1) A woman or non-binary person assigned female at birth
2) Aged 18 or above
3) Have received or are seeking a formal diagnosis of ADHD
4) Have access to Zoom
There is no compensation or reward for taking part in this study, however you will be contributing your perspective to a research area that is sadly lacking understanding of the real experiences of women with ADHD.
If you're interested in taking part please email me at 2601128W@student.gla.ac.uk and I will share more detail. Interviews will be conducted from Dec 2022 to Jan 2023; the project will be complete by April 2023.
Thanks for making it to the bottom of this post, I hope to hear from some of you soon!
