Somehow I missed this story in the Telegraph on 17 Sep 09 The two light fittings, which cost nearly £5,000 each, drop 15 feet from the ceiling and come with their own computer operated colour control system. The chandeliers have been fitted at the new Whitegate Drive health centre in Blackpool. They have been designed by a local glass blower, John Ditchfield, and each of the chandeliers contains 300 specially handblown pieces of glass. The new state-of-the-art centre includes a GP surgery, physiotherapists and dentists as well as facilities to carry out X-rays. Last year the local healthcare trust which owns the centre, Blackpool Primary Care Trust, was criticised for using £30,000 of taxpayers money to pay for party at a hotel to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the NHS. A spokesman for Blackpool Residents Network said: "This is a health centre for goodness sake not an art gallery. "Most of the people visiting it could not afford even a little piece by Ditchfield in these days when everyone is having to cut back. “Whilst the new health centre is welcome in a town with a poor health profile do we need these Illuminations or should we do with normal lights?" A spokesman for the PCT said that the chandeliers had been bought by the private company contracted to build the centre and that money had not been diverted from patient care to pay for them. www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/6199277/10000-chandeliers-at-a-new-NHS-health-centre.html

i wouldnt mind one of them, but come on its ridiculous that money could have been spent so much more wisely maybe it was an impulse purchase and once the guy started making it they couldnt get a refund. and does it really matter if it was privately funded or not again what a waste

i think it's good that they're supporting local craftsmen!... i can definitely see why Blackpool PCT want to throw a £30,000 shin-dig every now and again! -if i was getting paid the kind of money a GP gets, every day would be a party!

Sadly, or not, I like this sort of thing. Particularly if, as they say, the contractor paid for it meaning no money was diverted from treatment funds.
Also I don't begrudge the £30,000 the party cost. 420 went, that's £71 a head. Big party celebrating 60 years of very hard work by pretty poorly paid NHS workers (whether or not everyone who had worked for the NHS over the 60 years turned up). Not all NHS staff are 3 figure earning doctors and consultants.

Funny how things work, because my neighbour just told me that the Primary Care Trust that didn't want to fund the prescribing of my meds, has just had installed a blue glass sculpture measuring 3 metres by 2 metres in a new and fancy health care centre (the centre even has it's own gym). Apparently the makers of the sculpture were told to "create a piece of public art which would help create a healing environment" now doesn't that sound better than meds I think I'll go down there and hang out in their waiting room and soak up some of that healing environment (I can't register with that practice because I don't live within their boundary area ). But anyway folks, don't feel left out, because apparently, the company that makes these healing sculptures also makes them for other NHS Trusts so one may be coming to your town soon I haven't been able to find a picture, or cost if it comes to that, of this sculpture, so if I remember I'll take myself down there, casually stroll in and take a photograph ;D Still my Primary Care Trust is pretty stingy so I don't suppose their sculpture is as nice as Blackpool's chandeliers

Its one crazy world of thoes with making daft choices for thoes without and lining a few freinds pockets in the process, just makes you think if there ever was anyone honest in any type of power they would have him shot or sex scandal bit like clinton saw doc on him looked like he was a good guy and they soon fixed that. The whole worlds bent like a globe LOL! AAAAAAUUUUUUUUHHHHHHH

He did get head off his secretary though, they didn't make that up.
One of the main protagonists in the move against Clinton, expressing horror and disgust at his sinful act, a view corroborated by his part in a number of groups expounding the sanctity of marriage, and furiously waving a bible, has just admitted that he's been banging one of his married secretaries. Tosser.

youd think, but probobly not if they are going to create a 'healing environment' ;D
they should use a patient sculpture, in nottingham ive just found there is arts on perscription, where people with mental health difficulties can go to a 3hr arts class a week with an artist to meet with people and express yourselves through art. weve got an exhibit of some of the work and its all really good. you can refer yourself so im going to ;D

He at least they spent it on something really cool. Also I would like to add that politicians have many dastardly ways in which they profit from taxpayer money. It probably makes the place look brighter after and let us not forget how much of a crap hole blackpool is. The people there need as much cheering up as possible.
