Can we? Can I?
The more I read about ADHD, the more of my behaviour I can attribute to it. Why do I smoke? The dopamine released helps me relax because I've got ADHD so have low levels of it. Why do I forget what times we feed our daughters? ADHD made me forget. Why do I walk out of jobs? ADHD told me to do it.
Etc.
But, am I just making excuses. A bit, yes, but I don't think I'm doing any of these things deliberately, to spite anyone, or in a condition where I think it'sa the best thing to do, in a long term, happy pragmatic fashion.
What do you think?

Its something I was thinking about today (couldn't find my driving licence set it off but anyway...) I think that since I have know what it is I have been able to stop beating my self up about these things. I do them, I can't always help it, I do my best but in the end there is a reason why I find things difficult, loose things, forget, take ages, and knowing this has helped me feel much better and not stupid.
The difference between excuse and reason is using it as an excuse to stop trying to make it better, using it as an excuse to get away with something, carrying on doing stuff that you shouldn't with no attempt to make a change in your life, that is an excuse. Does any of that make any sense? Its like the disability label, I have no problem blatantly using it to get what I need to function, but I won't take what I don't need.

I decided the best way to play this game with myself was statistically. The first two times I go back to the house for something I've forgotten in the morning can be regarded as me. And the second two times its not my fault.
NB. Husbands/Wives and Offspring seem impervious to this logic, and are prone to getting exceptionally grumpy if dinner is not on the table on time.

Don't blame it on the sunshine, Don't blame it on the moonlight, Don't blame it on the good times, Blame it on a lack of control in the prefrontal cortex and low standard levels of dopamine
Reason not excuse, obvious I suppose, but I hadn't really thought of it like that.
I've also found it's a reason, not excuse, why I waste so much time on the internet.
Just noticed my Italianism in my first comment. It'sa the best thinga to doa.

Yes, everyone blames me for everything in this house, with or without the adhd, i'm quiet used to it!! I find a bit of comfort in the fact some of my traites can't be helped. Tho i really need to start making more effort to re-train my brain now i'm on meds. I'm forcing myself & it hurts!!

That's my excuse currently, too. I will do something about it, just need the medication to kick start it.

I hate to burst your bubble trouble, but i was hoping the meds would 'cure' me too!!
I'm not finding them a great help for for all my symptoms, its dawning on me i'm going to have to put a lot of effort into this if i want to realise my goals over the next 2 years!

I don't hope they'll cure me on their own, just that I hope they'll help with the motivation and focus to get on with the effort and therapy etc...

Sorry 'cure' was too strong!!
I (personally) was hoping for a bit more than i'm getting with concerta, but its early days.
You're right, if you can get to a happy medium with meds, it'll help push you on a bit. Good luck with it x

Sorry 'cure' was too strong!! I (personally) was hoping for a bit more than i'm getting with concerta, but its early days. Don't expect much. There will be a measurable improvement in your executive functioning and you will start to notice what a complete idiot you used to be and how you behave better most of the time. But it's no cure and a lot of people won't notice the difference. Your family will. It's worth it just for that.

My highly scientific "measurements" are The Oooo Shiny test. A friend waves something sparkly at me, if the meds are working I don't feel the need to stare at the sparkles and get lost in it. Driving somewhere, if the meds are working I just drive there, I can remember where I am going, I don't have any impulsive urge to take a ridiculous route or detour, call in somewhere else as well, and I don't get lost, take random wrong turns or forget where I am off to at junctions. I can even remember the route without looking at it at the time from looking at the map before, astonishing improvement. The sitting still(ish) in boring meetings index, much improved. Although the boringness of said meetings is not. I even just about managed on a wheely chair today (they had run out of normal chairs). That would have been IMPOSSIBLE before LOL The lateness quotient. I have been getting places on time. Unbelievable. Not always obviously. But not as late. Packing. One of my best improvements. Can I pack my stuff without wandering off, getting distracted, taking too long, forgetting stuff, wandering off again? Sometimes. The beer mat destruction measurement. I have been able to sit in the pub without shredding multiple beer mats into little bits. Similar to the sugar sachets in cafes.

Gotta agree on the wheely chairs problem - if there was nobody to race I used to time myself over a course

I wonder why Boo felt the need to shred beer mats in the first place? I mean, its logical to not destroy them..but what makes an adhder do these things and why do I feel that a nice job for me would be a wrecking ball operator even though I expect the buildings around me would not last long. I always liked blowing stuff up when I was young and destruction, preferable via lego or computers. What a weirdo....

I resisted the temptation to either post abuse or hunt the **** down to administer some of his own medicine - surely a good booting cures all mental problems including low IQ

Ok on the subject of drug testing...(shiny test)!!
Just had a very boring training day at work yest..Usually a time to be ultimately annoying to everyone else, no change there...Good way of seeing if things are working??
Still sat at the front interrupting the lecturer..Still wobbled my pen, tapped my pen, heaved & huffed, went to the loo an inappropriate no. of times. Had surprisingly murderous thougths about colleague, (feeling very aggressive atm).
So not that great lol, Husband now thinks i'm worse in evenings, very prickly?? God help us..

twix, i thought everybody destoyed beer mats, is that not what they are put out for then? they're not really for catching spilled beer are they ;D
safe that geezers a moron. i would have replied but i am not gonna give my email addy to such a pr*ck. and as for the first reply to it, i wonder if the patients of his little 'research project' knowingly took part, does that not breach all sorts of confidentiality issues? how the hell did he know what postcodes the patients lived at who received adhd treatments without accessing the presciption & patient details?
simone are you up to 54mg now (it is concerta isnt it)
i started on 36mg today and havent noticed anything. infact i didnt take one on sunday to see if i noticed a difference and didnt at all (knew i wouldnt though tbh)
the extra concentration at work is definitely attributable to a 'project' i have just started on which includes lots of exploring new ways to make a system work and is keeping me interested, this sort of project is something i would have put my all into anyway.
i am feeling quite prickly tonight, but its just down to grumpyitus in my case
boo (hiss boo!)

Ye but you know what that is the kind of thing people remark and it pisses me off that i have to put up with some arse whole who has heard on the grape vine who I am etc etc and have to listen to little comments like men in white coats etc.
Just glad am on the meds do think the mph is better for the rage though its stronger but in a way i dont like the way I can feel somthink holding me even if its holding me steady and makes me feel like "O ye white coats, O ye I see your are an arse whole good for you" on stretera your mellow but still a bit angry.
