I was just thinking about the possibilities of mood stabilisers for ADHD.
I know that mood stabilisers are used for Bipolar 1 and 2 and I think cyclothymia, namely the manic phase (symptoms of higher energy, far less sleep needed, mad ideas, overestimation of capabilities, to name a few.....followed by a major depressive crash.
The stabilisers are meant to lock down the start of the manic process so it can't happen, as far I am understand it.
Q) So, I was wondering if mood stabilisers would assist on the pure ADHD psychology? Is it the same areas of the brain being affected?
Part of my interest in this, is because I wonder how much of a snowball effect there actually is on the ADHD mind, in response to those silly mistakes that can be made, but more importantly, when emotional conflicts arise I wonder how much a low dose stabiliser could help avoid some of the crazy, relationship-splitting fallout potentials..
I certainly don't believe that stimulants alone are the perfect meds, especially as the main seller, ritalin (MPH) is over 50 years old...therefore I certainly believe that a secondary medicine is necessary, but I don't think it is usually considered to be necessary or even looked into.
I have listed a few relevant links, but some of you should know for sure, the answer to my thoughts........and I hope you can reply.

Scientists discover how lithium works.... 2008
Effects of lithium on "too-high" levels of GM mice.
This is not a link about ADHD + lithium, it's just a little bit of education.

Some of you already know this, but others' wont.

So, does that mean we have to start doing new things to "completion", to get the benefits of a satisfied dopamine boost and a feeling of success?
If so, it's going to be like the film CRANK, where statham has to do adrenaline raising things to keep his heart going........
