I'm not sure, being an office administrator was a no no for me!! I was so bored & managed to be the only person in the world who couldn't get to grips with the photocopier!
Working with people with special needs is brill, love them...Couldn't do it full time, i'd be knackered, but very suited to adhd, lots of variety, & usually nice people to work with.
I want to further my career, but, who knows, not sure i'd cope with more pressure atm? Starting to wonder if i need to focus on my artistic side too?
Love jewellery making & crafts, acrilics etc??
Would be perfect to have own business?

I read that there are jobs that ideal for people with ADHD, it's just a case of finding what is the right things.
Something I was told to think about was what you enjoy doing. If you hyperfocus on something can you get a job in that field? If not I've read something that mentions sales is a favoured job amongst people with adhd. I work in retail myself and whilst my adhd symptoms don't case as many problems there as they would in an office, I still have moments when I'm asked to do something, totally forget what it was and then get told off for it. If you end up on JSA, it might be worth asking if you could do a work trial. That way you could discover whether a job is right for you but you wouldn't lose your JSA or anything.

I think there are two things to consider re the job. Sometime the job is not the 'be all and end all' but the team of people you work with provide the mental stimulation that you need.
At other times it is mostly the job. For me it is mostly about working with other people in a busy environment.
My worst ever job was Medical Secretary.. booooooooooooored to tears......

You could always volunteer for things you think you might like and then see if you do, gives you a basic insight I have been looking at jobs I would like to do or companys and then contacting saying seen add not qualified but could I volunteer.
or do as a hoby, I had a freind who liked poll dancing and went to classes in. I often think its goood if you want to start a business in aswell although often small businesses will look at your motivation for wanting to volunteer specialy ones where there is little barriers to entry other than start up capital and customers, just need to make enough to get someone to do all your paper work unless you can perswade someone in family to do. As I know me and ADHDers in general arnt that hot on boring paper work.

Is poll dancing a way of getting people's opinions by impressing them with your moves?

I always wondered if working in a gadget shop would be good, after all the constant new items require some hyperfocus and you know what it's like to have a new burst of dopamine in your brain when you suddenly have energy to do things out of character...
Does that make sense or is gadget shop definitely a man thing?

ive always done retail and coffee shops. i like coffee shops as there is always something to do, but had problems remembering the orders so was always stuck on the till even tho i made good coffees. i also had to be really carfull giving change as i often made mistakes retail was good however not in all areas i worked in a sports shop when on the shoe de[artment my last boss said i could sell sand in a dessert, they used to do competitions which suited me great, i won an ipod, time off paid and money! it did look like a tornado had been following me around my mess was ridiculous and i was always getting told off for that and when they asked me to do somthing and i hadnt been listnening but when working on clothes where there was nothing to do i could have cried form the bordem so i left. that and i think i would have been fired soon enough for my moodyness i also love artyness and one day hope to set up my own business and have someone to help me with the paperwork side of things i need to look for a new job as im leaving uni but dont know what to try next, itl probably end up being retail tho as its the only job that i feel qualified to do and know i can do without major stress and difficulty it does seem like you like the job your doing i think i remember you saying its the second best job youve evr had. but the way they are treating you is disgusting, try and look for a simlar job at a different place, its all about the ppooeple, i only stayed in my last job as long as i did because i found some people as crazy as me, we used to get told off for playing games all the time but we did our jobs good too (most of the time

gadget shop sounds good would have to be careful not to buy one of everything though eh! on the other hand, you could always say you were going to test each one at home to make sure you had really good first hand product knowledge and never have to buy another never to be used gadgety gismo ever again, ;D

Yeah bar work is good. I was a bar maid for three years. I am now a customer assistant for a well known supermarket. With these jobs you get to move around a lot and there's always something different to do. No two days are the same.

I loved reading this about other peoples jobs. Every day, I think about leaving my job as I find it so stressful and every morning I go back and get another day out of the way... I work with young people and education and very often I actually get to work with my husband and there are parts of my job I am really good at and the obvious admin part I am horrendously bad at....Events I can organise and manage . Trips and residentials I find exhausting but I can get everyone there and back without loosing anybody..The paperwork is done at the last minute and may not even always be legal and the evaluations join a queue of things to do....I get there and I will probably wait till the funding runs out as I don't think I will leave... A couple of summers ago a friend asked me if I would help on an estate with some horses. I took all my annual leave and days off together and travelled 60 miles round trip every day to 1.500ft to the middle of the hills to work with some icelandic ponies..I was in the fresh air every day, I rode for hours and I was fit and so healthy and happy..It was like being on holiday every day and I realised that that was the sort of work I should be doing..(This was what I trained to do after school when I had left with no qualifications.) Unfortunaltly, it was wasn't realistic to leave my job and do this sort of travelling in the winter months and one of my other friends took the job.. Part of me has always been sorry I didn't do it...I have my own ponies and I relish every moment in the fresh air with them.. The work I am doing is so stressful and I feel like I am just fooling my bosses and they will def eventually catch me out... Until then though i will keep taking the wages!!... Hope you get a job you enjoy...

I always thought being a rock n roll star would suit me well ;D Other than that, I think I would be best off out and about working in the community. I work with disabled people (well i'm on long term sick but I was working with them) but being in the same hospital every day drove me nuts. Maybe I should concentrate more on guitar playing and try and write some songs

Hi - just thought I would add my two cents... Gishagirl - I am so with you on that one... I have never been happier doing manual/outdoorsy work in the fresh air and actually feeling satisfied and warmed all through my body every evening. There is some deep calming effect that this type of work has on us I think? I think our ADD positive state of mind is heavily dependent on this calm... Like you, instead of doing what I should be doing and forcing myself to seach for a calming job, I used my 'special powers' to hyper focus on being entrepreneurial and started setting up businesses - possibly the most satisfying job for an ADDer and conversely, possibly the most damaging. I tend to hyper focus and produce very good results in a very short time then once the ball is rolling I lose interest and bugger about with other things for half the day (thats the procrastination element coming into effect). I also fall short on the process and management side of things and end up leaving serious holes in the business. Luckily in my first business (that made $20m in its first two years!!) I had lots of staff and an incredibly good sorterouterer who just did all of this stuff for me - she ended up becoming my 50/50 business partner as a result of my gratitude for and recognition of my dependence on her. That business ended up getting taken over and I got kicked out (along with all the other staff) most likely because I didn't give it my full attention. I vowed from that point onwards that I would just get something easy like the pony job - perhaps national trust warden - artist or something? Did I hell!!!!! six months ago, we moved back to the UK from Aus and I set up another business and this time, as it is still in its early stages I am having to do everything including some of the accounting. I find this really hard. I think we ADDers are so dependent on assistance and for the best part we don't realise it?Look at some of the early posts 'it's not your job - its the people that you work with'. I read that as 'the people that you work with are not inspiring you enough to maximise your focus or they simply arent assisting you enough???' maybe I am wrong - but thats the way I see how I work with people. I need continual help in order for me to make the great potential that I have become a success (oh and to complete my normal days tasks!) Similarly, whilst I should be focusing 100% on my new business and making a success of that - I decided to a) design a revolutionary double front wheeled bike b) set up another only Eco store her in the UK c) teach myself CAD d) learn how to fly e) buy a cool old car to do up and drive in the Monte Carlo rally. I am trying so hard to say NO - I just don't have the time!! - If I focused 100% on this new business - It would earn really good money, I just can't seem to do it - or I can't seem to do it consistently. I gets me so depressed. It's like I don't really care if it works or not because I have all my other so called brilliant ideas to fall back on. The fact of the matter is that I am 37 years old, I have a loyal wife and two kids - and I need to provide for them and be dedicated to their needs over everything else. SO I am really trying at present to rein my brain in and use my time focus on a) the business b) one creative hobby (the bike) c) exercise/healthy past times (to keep my mind and body healthy and control the ADD). To summarise my excessive rant.... I think we are a talented bunch, we can make things happen rapidly and with great innovation. The trouble is that you need to keep that thing happening. You also need to check in with yourself frequently - every week and look at where you are going with it - be really strong and say NO to tangents unless you really really think a) you have time for them b) they will add to the success/furthering of your business/life. So if you are in a rubbish job, experiment with pastimes or dreams until you find the thing that you excel at - it doesn't matter if you try furniture restoration one month and sculpting the next - it will soon become apparent which one you have talent for. Then have a go at doing it yourself - perhaps as a sideline to normal work initially, get as much help as you can and get somebody RELIABLE to look after your finances and give you the reality check and to help you be consistent. I probably make myself seem like a right scatty-arse here and I most likely am, but the older I get and more times I learn and then mess up with ADD - the better I get at controlling/using it. I seemd to have survived somehow - I just wish that I could be consistently good. If anyone does want some more detailed advice on setting up a business - I would be happy to help. Here is my first business - Neco the worlds first Green superstore www.neco.com.auit started as a small on-line shop and ended up being the size of a Tesco's. Here's my latest UK business - www.williammartinenergy.com It helps companies become green and reduce their operating costs by being more efficient. Have quite a few big clients now - so I should stop writing this post now and do some bloody work!!!! arggg!!! there I go again!

Was that my comment you refer to? I think I just meant that sometimes the job can be not that interesting but you spark off the people you work with - I have had some boring jobs but the crowd I worked with made it worth going in every day. I wasn't really thinking in terms of the support and assistance perspective or the enablers - just more in terms of, speaking from my own experience, whether I looked forward to the work or the staff!
If I were to set up another business I'd be much more savvy about my strengths and weaknesses and also about the complementary skills I'd need to bring on board. As for tools, I think I a stick with a sharp pin on the end would be a useful prodder for my colleagues to use.

Here's another one NOT to try... My husband has a boxing club and I am usually really busy at the club running around looking after people or helping out.. One night he decided to take me out somewhere just the two of us and guess what!!?? we ended up in a wee town that just happened to have a boxing show on that night!! We had a nice meal and made our way to the show where he ordered me a glass of wine from the bar. ( my 2nd LARGE glass of the night). We made our way to ringside to chat to some of the officials we knew before getting a seat to watch the show. I was ambushed by one of the officials who said they were really short of people to help out and I needed to follow him as he had a job for me....I was led to a table and shown 2 clocks and a bell and told i was the official time keeper for the night!!! I nearly had a heart attack at the thought of it and it was only made 10 times worse when they showed me the list of bouts for the night and each one had a different amount of time per round and different amounts of rounds!! The place was buzzing and I was pertified and made my husband sit beside me asI knew there was no way i would manage all this on my own....At one point the 11/2 minute round went on for over 2 minutes and then in a three round bout I told my husband to shout '3rd and final round' and the ref had to say NO it isnt, it's only round 2!! What a Bl**dy joke!! Imagine having to watch the clock for the round, stop it ring the bell and start the rest clock for a minute, stop it, and shout the next round and re start the firt clock!!! With all that noise and activity... And the worst it was I kept watching the fights and forgetting all about the clocks altogether!!! Lets just say they will never make the mistake of asking me again!!....
