Hi Merry Christmas to all hope you are all ok... I am 36 and have been tranferred outside our NHS area as there are no ADHD specialists in Warwickshire.. Its taken YEARS through the NHS - i have seen counsellors psychologists etc on the NHS the last time in i think (if i can remember:))) 2006... i was referred by my doctor yet again for relationship problems again in March this year - very tearful, explosive relationship and couldn't cope.. sent to the local psychology unit in Rugby, assessed initially told there was an 18 month waiting list to see a psychologist... luckily i could afford at the time to see a private counsellor.
By September and seeing a privater counsellor she without me knowing eliminated other disorders etc and suggested in September (i think it was then ) it may be worth having a look at ADHD.. this adds up every single box in my life the dots are coming together thick and fast... I asked psychology to refer me they couldn't however they kindly did an internal referral to another psychiatrist in Rugby ..
My partner came with me (we have been through hell literally which hurts and tears me apart and him apart because we love each other so much) (by the was the book you me or ADD is brilliant - however if you buy please dont take in too much too quick with out some kind of support it will blow your head its exhilerating and depressing at the same time its the answers as to why??? why why why
Anyway i am rambling ill stay on track ! The psychiatrist in Rugby has refferred me to the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham there is a specialist (does anyone know him?) Dr Kanu.. i have my initial apppointment on 15th January he is the adhd/add specialist in Birmingham.
In the last 2 weeks its become evident that my partner may have ADD, we have been to his GP he has little faith in GPs and the medical system we have asked for him to be refferred to my psychiatrist to get referred to Birmingham too which if we can (and i believe we can do this) will be amazing we love each other so much.. also i am adopted, traced parents, spoken to birth father it looks like he has ADD too so many unanswered questions.. now i am trying to be slower and not jump the gun i know they cant refuse treatment and you can insist on a second opinion (apparently London Marsden would be a good option)
It makes me so upset thats its taken this long and having to see a private cousellor (others are not so lucky thay can so that its not fair) to finally find, understand and get some answers for my whole life and why its such a mess.
Apparently also its quite common for like to attract like ie add + adhd....
what can we do to move this quicker - you know us i would go knock on Browns door and ask for a chat this would make them listen explained properly maybe - cant we get a meeting not a petition ? There are so many people we are seeing some of our friends who have major major traits the answers are coming in thick and fast and this is so underestimated we do need to make a change why should we have to wait - shouldn't there be a doc in every practice who knows about the symptoms ie drug/alcohol addiction?
Any views ))
