Hi all. I am unemployed and have been assigned to a dissability employment advisor at the job centre. I must admit that at the moment I am starting to feel depressed by it all. Toady I got a call to attend an assesment for suitability for work which will involve attending a larger job centre for about 6 hours. Has anybody got any experience of this and what is likely to happen? Any advice and tips would be greatly welcomed. Best regards.

Six hours is outrageous.
If it's making you anxious (it is) then you should let them know that it's unsuitable on medical grounds (you have ADHD for goodness sake!).

Hi and thanks planet dave. I just called the job centre and the DEA explained that it's just an interview with an occupational psychologist (her son suffers from adhd), who perhaps with another person will be assessing the stage of my dissability and what type of employment or occupation is suitable for me. This is starting to make me feel inadequate since I have always held good semi-proffessional jobs and it's only over the last 12 months with my previous employer that this contion has been brought to my attention and I was diagnosed last July. If it had not been my my last emmployer constantly questioning my performance I would not be in this situation now of being unemployed. I am rock bottom at the moment with me bringing in very little money struggling to pay bills. The whole thing is spralling and feeding on it'self. Sorry for banging on about my personal issues. regards. mediaseller

Hi mediaseller, for what its worth I feel for ya. Im 45 recently diagnosed shortly after losing my job in April. I still have no work but have the problem of also wanting to find something that dosnt waste the the next 25 years. I've never had trouble getting work but now I am diagnosed I'm feeling like I cant do anything, my job centre wont even entertain supporting me. I know we don't have a choice right now in this recession but the whole job centre thing is a night mare. I have not learned less than £60K for the last 10 years and now I have to attend 'job hunting' lessons and have some twirp as me everyweek how the search is going, do i have access to a computer, have i written a CV......OH GOSH WHY DIDNT I THINK OF THAT?! Sorry for the rant, its late and I am annoyed. Listen hang in there and we can chat! Cheers

Thanks for the support jonnywhizzbang. I know what you mean about the jobcentre thing. When I went to sign on yesterday I got the usual "have your circumstances changed", blah, blah? Then I got a "let's have a look whats pn my PC". Like I growled at her, "what's the point when I have to be assessed which type of work will be suitable for me!? Turns out there was nothing on her PC anyway for me? Oh well I just have to jump through the flaming hoops like a dog in a circus act to get my subsistance allowance. Anyway I'm curious about your handle (jonnywhizzbang). Does it have some intentional reference to the munitions in the first world war? I look forward to hearing from you again. Best regards. mediaseller

Im kind of in a similar position mediaseller. I got laid off a few months ago and Im a bit fed up being unemployed and having to deal with all their crap. For a start off, my disability advisor has managed to see me once in 3 months, and there isnt really anything they can do for you anyway. I am always trying to get them to help me and always come out with nothing. Sorry if i sound pessimistic but this is my experience of the system. Like yourself also, they never seem to find anything on their pc for me either, and just to top that off, they have moved me onto a more intensive job search where I go every week. Haha you gotta laf. This means that now I get my self esteem lowered every week now instead of every fortnight.
I seriously believe that if you declare you have ADHD then you are giving yourself a mountain to climb when applying for jobs. When there are so many applicants why would an employer take on someone who is more trouble than they are worth. That isnt my own opinion of course but trying to get uninformed people to see that the benefits you bring to the table far outweigh the disadvantages is really difficult and will only happen in my opinion if the employer has previous experience of the condition. Like yourself mediaseller, I have always had decent jobs, so I am just going to not declare. This is something I do in the knowledge that I cannot cry for help in the future, but at least I will have a job and I will just crack on as is.
Oh and my tip for the Social is to just nod, say yes sir every now and again and do whatever they ask. The whole system is designed to try and get lazy layabouts working and moving and they do not cater for people like ourselves. So just keep looking around you at the real layabouts and remind yourself why you are looking for a job.

Thanks for that madscot125.
Yes I too am on the 10 mile weekly trek to my local jobcentre for my demoralising session with the trained monkey for 8 weeks then I go back to the fortnightly laugh after that.
Fortunately the 6 hour session that I have to attend a week on Wednesday will be attended by an occupational psychologist who apparently has a son who suffers from ADHD so should understand my plight.
I did throw them recently when asked them for a job like theirs in the Jobcentre. They couldn't find one of course.
I'm 57 and it seems to me that I'm goosed whichever way I turn because if the ADHD does not help then my age is against me.
Anyway there is a scheme where they will still pay you the weekly benefit to try out being self employed. This could well be a solution for me since even though I say it myself, I am multi talented. If it doesn't work out then I could go back on JSA if needs be.
Rant rant.
Best regards. mediaseller
