Hi - we are getting my 13 year old stepson assessed for ADHD asap, i am being assessed at present so is his father - we were told to initially wait until his Dad was assessed however he is having major problems at school with concentrating despondency etc etc, we are helping him organise hinself with his homelife as well as ourselves, we decided not to wait and that it was more important at this crucial time in schooling to get the assessment done asap.. we have spoken to the school and arranged an appointment to see them to see what we can do the problem is:
The waiting list with CAMS is a long time they said we can get privately assessed which is £500-£1000, we have already paid out nearly £500 to a private counsellor who picked it up with me where they failed after years, we simply cannot afford this and he needs help more urgently than us i believe - what can we do to get this pushed through urgently?
If there is no help in the area do they then have to refer us to another area? Can they pay the private fees? If we wait 18 months his schooling will be out the window he is already thinking he will fail, we are looking at changing his options that are too boring to creative ones - can anyone offer any kind of advice ?
Many thanks
Amanda

My advice is to get the school and your gp to help you nag Cahms and ring them and tell them how bad it is and see if you can get seen sooner the waiting list is not a fixed thing it depends how bad it is. Other than that no idea, sorry. Good luck.

Hi mandamoo
You're absolutely right your stepson can't wait until his dad is assessed and whoever suggested that is way way wrong. At 13 he is at a critical time in terms of his education. If he does have Adhd and it is significantly affecting his school and home life then he needs help now!!
Not all schools can refer direct to Camhs and not all schools recognise Adhd when it's there before their eyes!! However your Gp can make a referral direct. Tell him it's urgent. In our area urgent referrals are seen within 4-6 weeks and non urgent 10-12 wks. Once the referral has been made ring your local Camhs to find out how long your stepson will wait and keep on ringing them!!
Good luck

Hi thanks for the replies... been to the school today they were quite helpful, very reluctant to change any of his classes and only so much they can do until he gets diagnosed...
With the cams waiting list being pants in this area what about private - does anyone know who is best to go to in the midlands, we also want dysgraphia assessing too... if we go private whats the estimated cost? Do private docs prescribe meds and can it then be switched once diagnosed to the nhs for treatment?
?!?! its a longer list for kids than adults?!?!

My son was diagnosed privately in 1997 /cost £1000 ! but it was the best £1000 I ever spent ! We had a prescription same day and eventually we transferred to NHS ! As long as Dx is there and Rx is working then its more straight forward !After all its all about money and you will have saved the NHS the cost of assessment and also lots of stress for your son and yourselves ! Hope you find a solution ! x
