In my experience as a parent of a child with ADHD and also my own personal horrendous time at school I think we should try to lobby for a change in the UK education system ! Check out The Sudbury Valley School in Masechusettes USA ! There is something kind of similar in the Hampton Court School in Hampton near Kingston Upon Thames ! These schools are the way to go as our children need guidance so they can find their own way through self exploration and not beaten till they become the angry people we now have in our society ! I am fed up to the back teeth of The So Called Education system in this country ! It obviously doesn't work so why don't we look at countries where they offer an alternative which does work !?

I went to a normal mainstream school, had good discipline, got into a fair bit of trouble. It didn't do me any harm. I actually managed to pass my exams, just. In my experience schools these days lack discipline and give up on the naughty kids too easily, due to a lack of understanding. This country is spiraling in debt and we can't afford more specialist schools. Give teachers the bottle to deal with discipline and the training to deal with the behavioral problems. Most of the ADHD kids I deal with in school use it as an excuse to give up and not bother trying. I am glad I was an adult when I got a dx, because I probably would have given up instead of fighting to prove I was as good as everyone else. I have ADHD and am actually more talented in others areas, which makes up for some of my limitations. It is about time we focused on our strengths and not our weaknesses, I work with some right numb nuts and often wonder who is disabled!!

I find most schools very depressing places these days. From a parents perspective & having heard the horror stories from my family (lots of teachers) & friends. Its sad for us parents, having so few choices for their children.
I have 4 kids with varying needs, one is thriving at a Grammar school, it's a pressured environment but she's ok. I have one (yet) undiagnosed, but struggling child, who's own gifts are completely swamped by the boring, endless, structure. My third child, (dx adhd) is coping ok at school atm, but i worry for the next few years, when school becomes increasingly 'serious'.
My youngest is starting preschool soon. So when do children have fun these days? I struggle to cope with their amount of homework, most evenings are a drudge of spellings/tables/literacy/research? Its crap, i wish they could just get home & play (ok i guess spellings r important and tables, at least til yr 7)??
I struggle with it all. They do have art/play activities at school, but i wonder if kids actually need more than a couple of hrs study a day? Mine could cope with a couple of intensive study hrs in the morning, in small groups..Dream on?
If i win the lottery, id send them all to Steiner schools lol
PS Sherry, i work with Adults with learning difficulties, & i cant tell staff from su's at some day centers lol

It will change all the faster once they realise what damage schools can do by stamping creativity and individuality out of our students and teachers. The curriculum has gotten so safe and narrow - they use the exact same examples up and down the country to illustrate each thing they teach. I don't think its as useful to have the entire population know the exact same facts as each other about a topic. The current system is too inflexible all round.

I agree the education system has become too target governed just like other areas in the public sector. Hopefully the education will begin to change for the better, tho that very much depends on who is the next government. The 14-19 diplomas that offer more vocational choice are a move forward, although I feel that children should be able to make choices about their education earlier. I also agree that there is a little too much homework, unfortunately a lot of pressure is placed on teachers to get as many children as poss 5 A-C gades. Vote with your feet.

Their hands are tied - too tightly in my opinion. Too much crap about being PC and being inappropriate - my kid has a disorder FFS just tell her like it is ... dont mess about asking me if her meds are optimal OF COURSE THEY ARE .... thats what we have a paedeatrician for aint it? ? Schools - do something progressive why dont you - teach
