My wife has been diagnosed with ADHD but is being bounced around between my local PCT & GP as to funding treatment as the nearest ADHD clinic resides within another adjacent PCT area.
Any advice as how to progress?

I had a similar problem last year, and evenutally I understood that my GP just didn't understand the process himself, and he kept doing the wrong thing. In the end he said that there had been so many changes to procedures ...
I think it's worth reading up yourself as far as you can on what the correct process should be, and there is a lot of good information as well as helpful people on this site.

Dear Colin Ring the PCT and ask who is responsible for implementing the new nice guidelines regarding ADHD and explain your situation to them and what are they going to do about it ? The funding comes from them usually so the buck stops with them !

hi Colin I'm still trying to get my dx(diagnosis) but have had to fight hard to eventually get a referral to a specialist. can i first ask who(as in gp, psychiatrist) dxed your wife? if they can dx then why can't they prescribe(rx)? OK lets start at the beginning. PCTs are obliged to provide services for dx and rx for adhd, this is laid down by NICE, they do not have to provide these services themselves but can buy them from other PCTs. GPs and even some consultants, ie mine, haven't got a clue. or so it seems. I often think they're playing dead coz it's cheaper. It shouldn't be your job to sort funding but sometimes it helps if you know the situation. I suggest you write to your PCT asking several things. The questions have to be very precise or they can fob you off. Also a good tip is to ask for the information under the freedom of information act. they then have to reply within three weeks. Ask your PCT if they have any service to diagnose and treat ADHD in Adults, as is required under NICE guidelines(I think it is CG 72). If so, where, and how do you access them? If not, who have they placed their contract for these services with. www.aadd.org.uk has oodles of info about NICE etc also this forum is a wealth of info I have found that when you start asking questions from the powers that be if you are knowledgeable they stop trying to bullsh*t you. try reading the shortform of the guidelines then you know what should be happening and keep asking till you get. I keep poking any and everyone and as the saying goes the squeaky wheel is the one that gets the oil. hope this is of help. any more questions just post on here we will do our best to support you.

sounds normal, not sure what funding theyre talking about, CBT shouldnt be terrible to fund with a diagnosis and theres none needed for medication so maybe im being a dumbass but either way keep going, adhd is like having lead boots with doctors sometimes

When I first asked my GP about diagnosis, he told me I was to old (I was 36) and it was to late to diagnose me, he also said he didn't have a clue where to refer me and most doctors didn't even believe adhd was real. I felt so angry and frustrated. I finally got a referral to the adult mental health team through my daughters psychologist. It's not been easy, but with perserverance and patience you will get there in the end.
