Hi all I hope you are well. not been on here for ages. i have now been told i have adhd.at last. so this morning i have had my first tablet of concerta xl 18mg. he says the does is low as i have ticks and this could make them worse.but bingo i have ticks far less now. i took the tablet at 730 am. could some one please tell me when they fade out later in the day. about 330 i got all clumsy and started to get anxious and started to make ticks again. I know that its only been a day and i feel so relieved inside and what this medication is doing for me. I even started to giggle in the shower and felt the old flame feeling back in my belly of positive feelings about life. now I'm sitting here feeling bad as i feel as though they are wearing of now. sorry now I'm going on one. i would be great full if some one could just let me know there experience of this tablet thanks tigger

hello tigger, i started on concerta a few weeks ago. i started on 18mg now im on 36mg. i also found they only last about 8 hrs after that i start to get a bit stressy and a few days emotional. but they are going fine for me apart from friday when i had heart palpatations but have been ok since. i havent really noticed that much difference so far, i feel a bit calmer and can sometimes focus longer than i used to be able to, but more than anything they have gave me hope

Hi Laura. i have found they only last about 8 hours.i have had dizzy spells after the 8 hours and my legs went like jelly. Your right they have given me hope to, Now that its acknowledged that i have adhd things can progress a little better now. I definitely feel calmer now but its only been 3 days . I got back to the clinic in about 2 ND a half weeks so i will ask if i can have a little longer than 8 hours as i work longer than that. Its like being an elastic band at the moment.by body wants to rush around and my brain wants to stay still,if you get what i mean. Thanks Tigger ;D

I've just been prescribed Concerta xl today, initial dose is 36mg, after a week adding 18mg - then increasing to 2 x 36mg. I was diagnosed privately, so I have to pay for the prescription - £180 approx cost given by Sainsbury's Pharmacist !! I'm hoping my GP will be able to prescribe this on the NHS instead. The psych said a GP could repeat prescribe, so I presume that it's possible. I'll let you know how I get on with Concerta

Get your psychiatrist to send the diagnosis and recommended dosage to your GP and they'll probably play ball and prescribe for you.
It's bigger news on these pages when a GP refuses - doesn't happen much (according to the anecdotal evidence).

Snap . I wish I could work though as I am getting really peed off with being poor. I have never lasted more than 2 months in a job apart from the army without either making a really stupid mistake or having a massive row with someone , usually the boss. I have been on it , I can't really remember it for I don't remember how long but about a week. But the effects agaist anti depressants are massive . But I get quite lively after about 2pm . Had to have a blood test to see how the liver is and I have even been able to cut right down on the self medicating

Hi tigger
Pleased to hear the meds are helping!
How long is it before you see the psychiatrist so you can review this dose?
We all know medication is not a "cure all" but given the right level of medication it can allow us to get to where we need to be ,without all these daily mistakes - leaving the key in the door, going in and out of the house 3 or 4 times before we remember to pick up the keys, shopping list and everything else we need to get us through the day!! Then we can at least start to tackle all these little difficulties which when accumulated make the day a nightmare.
It sounds as though you are on an upward life curve - no more being held back.
Good luck

I was diagnosed 3 years ago and medicated with 18 mg concerta xl. I was then discharged. I went to the doctor on monday last week because im getting suicidal thoughts and was in front of a psychiatrist within three days. Tests show im NOT depressed so got to go back again next week to hopefuly change meds from concerta xl to Dexedrin
Prolonged use of concerta xl can result in suicidal thoughs. Its the XL bit i think coz you come down with a bang at night.

Hi I get to go back for an assment of my meds in 10 days. I have asked if i can take my wife as so some one can explain why i am and why i do the things i do. She has now noticed i am calmer in the evenings and can sit and relax.I have done meditation and alike so it helps that i can now have a more logical brain so can practice this again. I used to be on prozac and that just left me flat and not being ablw to feel anything.Just horrible. I have no crashing down in the evening now that i have been taking concerta for over a week. They say life bagins at 40.in 40 in augast so thats what i have been aiming for and it seems to be working Tigger

Hi adele, I am an adult, so my experience will be very different to your young daughters. The psych who prescribed my Concerta XL, stated that child's medication has to deal with the hyperactivity problem, where as adults is more for attention / concentration problems. So adult dosage WILL possibly being less - despite differences in body weight. My experience (dependent on dosage) is one of feeling calmer, have better concentration levels and am less susceptible to distractions. Your daughters character should remain bubbly and fun, less hyper and more settled. If her behaviour dramatically changes....contact the psych and really question the dosage - this happened to me, I halved my dose and my mood and character are much improved. I have NO scientific basis for these comments....only personal experience (as an adult) and from what I've read. Good luck, I think I needed something like this when I was 6 yrs old! My parents struggled to cope with my hyperactivity, the doc recommended tranquillizers...but my mother came to her senses and refused !! Good luck, keep us posted

Does anyone know if this comes in a liquid or chewable form, my son had difficulty swallowing the tablet without chewing it

Hi Shaun, are you aware that Concerta XL is a timed release drug?
Basically each tablet has an outer dose of MPH, then layers of a digestable 'wrapper' that then dissolves before releasing the next layer of MPH etc.
Having it in liquid or chewable form would completely defeat the purpose of the timed release.

Does anyone know if this comes in a liquid or chewable form, my son had difficulty swallowing the tablet without chewing it Concerta doesn't but there are others that are. IIRC Ritalin* extended release is a capsule filled with small beads of medication (like poppy seeds) - variable sizes so digested at different rates. You can take them out of the capsule. A liquid would not work as an extended release medication. * if it's not Ritalin XR there is deffo one that is like this - can anyone confirm?
