You are within your rights to insist that your son is assessed by the local educational psychologist through the school. They should have an SEN advisor and if they don't play nice go straight to the County Education Department. You can also see if there is an ASD outreach team in your area and/or a local ASD network. It will be a fight, but don't let them push you about and never agree to the first amount of support they offer Keep smilin Elly

I keep getting told that he is getting lots of help as he gets speech and language therapy now but surely they need the extra money ?
The other problem is he doesn't want to change schools and we need to nominate a school so I suppose it has to be the one he is in even although children who haven't got a disability find this school difficult. I have to take my hat off to him as even although he doesn't always manage a whole week he wants to stay there !

I have to take my hat off to him as even although he doesn't always manage a whole week he wants to stay there ! Speech and language therapy is good, but he needs a statement of educational needs. The school will get more money to help him then and he should also get a 1:1 assistant for several hours a week. I think my sons was 16hrs. The school is failing in it's duty of care if they do not involve the educational psychologist and get him the support he needs. When you nominate a school for his statement it does not mean he will be able to go there. The school must be able to meet his needs and sometimes it does mean a change of school. The best thing to do is ask around about other schools and ask the county what schools have specialist SEN departments. This is not always "special schools", but mainstream ones with specialist units attached with give the best of both worlds. If you would like to go more indepth please feel free to PM me.
