You could try ringing Dr Andrew Moore in Barnstaple at the Hospital for advice (if your son isn't already being seen by him). We've been given this number for him (01271 322654), but if it doesn't work the hospital switchboard is 01271 322577. We've heard of a couple of adults who are being treated by Dr Moore for ADHD. If that doesn't work, you could suggest to your son's doctor that they contact UKAAN ( www.ukaan.org/) for help and advice because UKAAN is a network of UK adult NHS ADHD specialists set up to help & train other doctors. I hope this helps!

Hi! I'm really sorry if this is inappropriate but erm I want to know whether or not this is just in my mind. Does anyone else find that concerta increases sex drive? I'm sure I notice it more on days when I take a higher dose.
The doctor and my mum (nurse who specialises in ADHD) have often asked me what side effects I get but I don't particularly want to tell/ask them about this! No-one's ever mentioned this side effect to me before but isn't concerta chemically similar to amphetamines which do have this effect? I might be wrong I'm not a chemist!

Yep they sure do , but it is an adhd trait to have a high sex drive anyway . Just enjoy it as it is hardly a abd side effect to have

Hi, just wondering if anyone can offer some advice. I have Concerta XL (I have tried Mod, Strat before but didn't like them/they didn't work) but I find that if even if I take it around 7am I cannot sleep until about 4am...and the other problem is, I don't even feel it works during the day. The only effect is that it stops me sleeping. Has anyone else had this experience?
Thanks, W.

Took concerta today for the first time.
9.30am-
Went out to town to unlock my iphone. On the drive to the shop, felt calm. My mind wasnt racing and the internal commentary I constantly provide myself with was somewhat less. I normally go mental at shit drivers, but this time I felt sorry for them because they must be feeling nervous or confused, or simply they are not as capable as myself, which was nice. I always hate my negative side, its so exhausting. In the shop, which I didnt leave till about 2.00pm becuase I was having a great chat with the two guys in there. I was asking them to fill in all the wholes ion my computer knowledge which they kindly did. I was almost smiling when they were talking and i felt really good.
2:00pm
Got home, watched Wiggins and started to play the guitar. At about 5pm I suddenly felt like i had snorted a massive line of coke. I became very very angry and aggressive. I nearly smashed my guitar because it was frustrating me. My muscles were going into spasms and I just wanted to smash everything around me, or go running lol. I was pacing and sweating. I felt very very depressed and exceptionally suicidal. I think if i had had a gun, I would have probably blown my self away. It took me about 3 hours to feel better but the experience has been so frightening that im not going to continue. I thought maybe i could try a weaker dose but that was the 18mg (the lowest one you can get i believe). If anything appart from feeling good in the morning, which might not have been the concerta anyway, I couldnt focus, and i wasnt calm. Ive been doing a thought diary for my CBT and found myself writing pages and pages of thoughts. I couldn't stop and every time I stood up and left the room, i had to go back instantly and keep writing. Now I dont know what to do :-( that was supposed to be my get out clause, my one shot at having a normal happy life. What do I do now.
It seems pretty clear that amphetamines are not good for me becuase im naturally depressed and anxious. Taking concerta just magnified those feelings to the point I couldnt take it anymore. I was possibly a danger to myself and others, as i felt quite paranoid. Still it does say that on the notes that come with the capsule. My only quesiton is, why was i prescribed them when it clearly states someone like me shouldnt be on them. After all, the person who perscribed them was the same person who diagnosed my Add with a letter to my Gp telling them in summary that I am this way.
Going to have very strong words with the add clinic in horsham. They put my life at risk!

Wooaaaa Wooaaaa wooooa!
You have just taken this for the first time today. What you are experiencing are the shock first day side effects. I ha EXACTLY the same for the first week. I am now on the start of my third week and I can tell you that the second week was bliss and the third week is still bliss but I have a few headaches, but I am putting this down to tiredness because I have been so excited by my improvement that I have been staying up late finishing projects.
I felt really really sad, spiteful and just downright angry in the first three days. I did also feel suicidal - but I know a lot better than to listen to those thoughts
My advice - please stick with it - unless you are an usual case it will get better for you!

I began these tablets coming up to two months ago on 18mg I suffered sever dizziness but continued tablets as side effects wore off also my concentration was much better, but since upping the dosage these past two weeks I've felt depressed, fed up & I can't cope with anything. I went back to see adhd consultant today & after filling in the questionnaire for symptoms of adhd he compared it with previous ones & neither of us can notice very much improvement. I don't know whether Concerta XL is making me depressed but I told him I'll carry on taking them otherwise I'll just be back at square one with nothing to control constant talking & mind on the go 24/7. From tomorrow I shall be taking 63mg for a two week period. My sleep hasn't improved either still not settling until early hours :-(

I reckon it's something to do with the lob release rather than quick release versions. I have two pills one is 27 mg long release and one is 18mg quick release. I feel good on the quick release 18mg and it seems to last me for the working day and makes me a bearable into the evening. Like you, the long release just makes me feel wired, anxious - heart palpitations etc.... I clearly am a complete lightweight! Will post more when I have done more experimentation as I am still only on my 3rd week of concerta. I sense that you your body might be a bit sensitive too?

For a few months I was on doses of Concerta from 18mg up to 54mg. Found the first few hours were always brilliant but after that I would have a fuzzy head for a few hours then really jittery in the evening. Told the ADHD clinic about this a few times but it wasn't until I got to see another specialist there I was told it is because the slow release dose is too low.
A few days ago they switched me from 36mg Concerta XL to 10mg Methylphenidate, taken 3 times a day. So far no jitters or weird feelings, my body is definitely happier with this, even though its basically the same drug.

I am on my 4th day on concerta I started 18mg for the first three days and seemed really happy. All of my frustration was left behind somewhere. I was told to double the dose today which I have. I feel I have severe goldfish brain today but it's weird I notice everything but just can't quiet tie it together. Does this last or is this how I am going to be forever.

Hello cupcake
I am having a much better day today goldfish brain is nowhere to be seen. What I did sounds similar to you I got the private consultation. And took the info to my NHS GP. 2 things you could try either register with a different GP who is willing to prescribe the drug. Or you could try one of the medical cash back programs you can find on the Internet. You pay for the private prescription and they give you the money back a few days later. I am on medicash not sure how they are for scripts as my GP prescribes of of the private recommendation. Which is why I reckon try a different GP first.

My first day switching from 18mg to 27mg I was very assertive, almost verging on aggressive, though this was during a conversation about muscles (origins, actions and insertions). I was being told by a miniature sculptor that what I had done on the trapezius was incorrect, the guy might not have intended it, but he sounded a tad patronising. However, my tipping point was when he was talking about the trapezius and he didn't even know the name of it...
That's when I snapped and called him on his crit and then told him why he was wrong. It was only afterwards I realised how aggressive I came across.
A couple of things I've found out and feel are worth mentioning about Concerta.
1. Avoid vitamin C an hour (ideally 90 minutes) before or after concerta, it blocks the absorption completely and cancels it out altogether. 2. Avoid pineapple at least 2 hours after meds, there's an active enzyme in it that acts as a catalyst and will get you insanely hyper, far more so than if you have two strong black coffees .

Thanks again Mr buildy I will avoid fruit first thing as I had been using that to line my stomache.
Yesterday I had an okay day and today has been really good.
On my okay day I thought about what would really mess with my head tomorrow. I wrote a to do list got it done. Which set me up for a really good day today.
This is a massive contrast to Thursday when I nearly got out of my car and chased another car driver down the street for driving too erratically round an elderly gentleman. I could feel my thoughts constantly shattering and reforming. I could also tell you that the man go's in my kitchen were from Israel imported through Spain and weighed 2kg. I only walked past the box once.
Needless to say I am feeling loads better today.

All really helpful comments - I am just about to start taking Concerta for the first time (18mg, slow release), and am a little nervous. Rather typically I have played 'internet Doctor' and read up on the side effects. I also take omeprazole for recurring acid reflux which can play havoc with my digestion (mild IBS) - the Doctor didn't seem too concerned at this. They took my blood pressure which was slightly elevated but told me to get it checked again in a month or so.
Saturday will be either my first or second day taking it - I am due to meet a friend in town during the day; this will involve a few pints and I'll be travelling there and back alone on public transport; anything I should be aware of? (Sorry sounds like a dumb question!)

auxilia I wouldn't advise drinking out of the house on concerta until you know how it affects you, so maybe don't take it on Saturday (or don't drink). . . a lot of people are nervous about taking meds because of side-effects. . this is why you're started on a low dose, to see if you get any worrying side-effects . .the good thing about the stims is that they don't stay in your system very long, so if you experience anything unpleasant it will only last a few hours. gc7 has just started concerta after being extremely nervous about side effects. .you might like to look at some of her posts or diary. Although there's a really long list, the most usual thing is headaches, which often settle down as you get used to taking it. A lot of people don't notice any difference on a small dose . . My first day I felt really spacey, but only for the first day. . I don't think my brain knew how to react to the sudden stimulation. Keep notes of any unpleasant effects to tell your Dr, particularly if you get an evening crash.

Well - a false start it would seem - went to collect today and the pharmacist couldn't hand it over as the Psych wrote out the prescription incorrectly
