Ok as a child I learnt a thing or to about ADHD. One of those things was I could not sit still.
I am dyslexic so in school I was always told to "take time over your work, try no to get distracted by others around you and to try concentrate."
This would normally lead me to chucking a table at the teacher or punching someone in the face.. bad I know but its true.
I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was really Young, all my teacher know about it and so did the special needs department but not much information about what it was, was around.
Still with all of this they told me to sit still and concentrate. Now i am going to attempt to describe what this did to me. Note this is only a ruff example (an extreme but generally it went like this)
30 seconds to 1 Min into sitting still: Frustrated.
1min - 1min 30 seconds into sitting still: Getting pissed now, I want to get out of here.
1min 30 seconds - 2 mins: Ok I am feeling a build up of what I can only describe as energy and frustration now. I want to burst.
2mins - 2mins 30 seconds: Ok, that's it, enough for me i am getting out of here....
2mins 30 seconds - 3 mins: I get up and do something stupid or naughty.
After this I would be sat in a room on my own. This is a bad idea.... It only added fuel to my fire I was getting bored and inpatient it drove me nuts to the point I would trash something.
It was because I could no concentration that frustrated me, work was boring I found it to slow for my taste I just wanted to be free and a child. I worked well in situations that I was kept busy wood work, metal work, electronics, chemistry etc as long as I was kept busy I was an angel I just loved to multi-task and I still do today.
I strongly feel telling someone with ADHD to sit still and do work like the normal kids is wrong. I feel children with ADHD as bad as I had should be separated from children without it.
We should go to a special school where the teaching system is different (im talking a different teaching method here a more hands on thab just sit a read or copy what im putting here..)
The whole attitude to ADHD and education I feel is flawed but anyway this is not really about the education as such. All the above was said to give an example of why telling someone with ADHD to sit still or sit on the "naughty spot" wont work and will make your life hell!
I am interested in hearing from you mums, dads, teachers, care workers etc what you do to handle / punish children with ADHD?
You clearly need some sort of punishment for bad behaviour so you can recognise bad and good when growing up. But what to you do? how do you do this?
The only ways I can think of is:
Slap (frowned upon by many but tbh I got slapped in the past and it knocked sense into me and made me a better person.)
Getting something taken away such as a TV.
Being told you got no pocket money.
With all the above punishments off course would result in more bad behaviour but something needs to be done right?, as long as i was kept active as a child and always had something todo, such as make things with my hands, go out an experience new stuff I would be fine a little angel. I needed lots of stimulation.
I guess its possible to punish and give a child something todo at the same time to keep them busy? but what can this be?
