Hi everyone,
I'm at my wits end with the NHS and my husband who has yet to be diagnosed. Here's a little (to use the word veryyy loosely) background on our situation:
My husband is 25 and I had always jokingly said that there was something not quite right about him. I put a lot of things down to his age and inexperience - his first time living away from his overly doting mother. Joking about his "not quite right-ness" got a lot more serious with his love for illogical arguments which often escalated to violence and him self harming. Constantly picking up after him didn't help either. After another pointless argument, I Wiki-ed ADHD and reading the symptoms was like someone had wrote that about him. It was shocking and very upsetting for him.
We got a GP appointment and 2 sessions with someone who does the initial assessments later we were told he was on the waiting list to see a specialist, one of the 2 in the N. East. That was 7 months ago.
I nagged him to chase it up. More arguments because he felt he was doing better after cutting down the sugar and processed foods in his diet. After threatening to leave him if he didn't find out how long more he'd have to wait, he went to the GP and found out that he was on the waiting list for anger management, and not ADHD.
After numerous phonecalls to the surgery to get a referral and another visit to a mental health professional he has been told he's on the waiting list to see the specialist and they will ring back/write. This was over a week ago. The last person he saw mentioned that he would be good candidate for medication but told him he was not to tell the specialist he wants medication and that the NHS would likely be unwilling to give him medication because it's expensive.
I know many of you have gone through this nightmare which is getting the diagnosis.
Could someone please tell me what comes next?
What's the estimated time post diagnosis before they give him medication?
How long does it take before the medication is effective?
Are there any other diets/treatments/classes/activities which are helpful? He has cut out Coke completely and really reduced his intake of sweets and chocolate because they really affect his moods.
He now is very keen to sort himself out but I'm worried his enthusiasm will fizz out before the treatment. I would also love any advice on how to get him to do essential things. He knowingly driving around without an MOT for 4 months. He has also drove around in a van he knew was a fire hazard. He knows he shouldn't do or should do certain things but he's just really good at ignoring it, even at the risk of his safety. Then there's the impulsive spending....
Would realllllyyyyy love some advice on how to cope, what to expect and if it's not too much, a light at the end of the tunnel!
Sorry for the long post!
