Hi FW, posted really long reply under guest the other night.(on site, LOL!!) Its gone into the aether of course..yeah Lazarus etc...(god damn good idea though, will get a round toit... ) firstly well bloody done for getting the statement request completed, haven't picked up in previous posts if this was info you had to put in to back up the schools request,or if it was your own? Im waiting to appeal the NYCC refusal as nobody in Ryedale has heard of ADD, BUT IPSEA have and will be there to support you if you need it. Would be v interested to be kept informed about your progress. Thanks for your comments so far too x

Oh Gremico....we sooooo need a chilled glass of wine..... and to clink it....cheers I agree, we need to congratulate ourselves on surviving the first (of many, no doubt) hurdles.... I can't quite believe that I did manage to create a request....your average Joe Bloggs must struggle, let alone us (highly in my case) atypicals.......think I'm going to be laid out now for the rest of the year!! Jolly good it is too, if I do say so myself! well so far the school have been very supportive, but I did the Statement myself..... When I just mentioned it in passing to the SENCO she told me that she wasn't bad enough, so I don't know if they will back me.....I wish I had done it in year 1 but I didn't know I had a brain disorder at that point ....it's easy with hindsight..... 'Naughty' daughty was very naughty at that point in time and I probably would have got one very easily then....but I gave the Head Teacher a copy of all 11 pages and 7 enclosures today just to remind her EXACTLY how bad things were.....she does have sympathy with my situation as she has a brother in law with bipolar disorder and when I first told her that DD had that she accepted that she could see it in the behaviour.... The very fact that my stance is novel....I.e. bipolar disorder with comorbid ADHD might mean that they agree to assess.....but who knows? Virtually 100% get turned down here first time....don't know if your loc auth is the same? my sister is a T.A. and told me that these things take so long to go through that often schools don't want the hassle because they are not the one's who will ultimately reap the rewards, instead it will be the secondary school....Oh God, hope it doesn't take that long?! what can you put in the appeal? they haven't heard of ADD??? That is blimmin unbelievable..... I think all schools do is get them to a stage where they're no longer affecting the class or they're beginning to pay more attention and produce more and then that's job done..... Have heard that IPSEA are brilliant.....the course that I'm on at mo for parents of ADHD (and autistic) kids is run by a lady who volunteers there so will ask her more tomorrow.....it's our last session and it just so happens to be.....all about the Statementing Process! did you actually list possible accommodations in yours? How are the school now? we have our last team around the child meeting on Monday, so should be interesting!! now that I've put in the request.....I had to ask whether my DDs new teacher was invited? She wasn't.....beggars belief, doesn't it? after all this......if I make it through in one piece.....I would like to help others..... oh I wish us both good luck.....keep in touch x

Sorry if this seems short but knackered! SENCO at my school has as much said only appeasing me by going along with request!! And that only became apparent after local EMS, so called experts, had no knowledge of ADD! I had her assessed at an IQ of 105 by York University(Top research uni) and told school if she shows levels that do not solidly indicate that she will achieve key stage 2 above the average attainment, we ( I and my daughter) will be holding them responsible legally.

Into the....Greek thing! I have mentioned before that in nursery, I was asked to take d for a hearing test (oh god at this time i was in denial) Only probs identified was when she has a cold, like majority of population, but SENCO never followed up why problems persisted. I became v concerned in Reception and was told that assessment would be carried out. Never was until i DEMANDED after poor attainment at EYFS. EP over worked and useless, york university much better, but watch their attention to detail in reports, as typically academically ADD! Also thinking of having a ADDUK meet up in this area...tents...music... wine...

I've been helping a parent got thrugh the Statement process and you need to be ready to be in there for tyhe long haul!!
She applied for the Statutory Assessment on the 15th Feb 2012 and it has taken the LA until March 2013 to actually issue the Final Statement. LA's get up to all sorts of delaying tactics - until you get the Final Statement, you're not in a position to appeal to SENDIST. We have now appealed and suddenly the LA want to co-operate!! The national charity, IPSEA, are really helpful, so do use their website as well as their helpline (difficult to get through to, but do perserve)
Along the way parents get fed all sorts of rubbish info - you're child's not "bad enough", they're achieving to the expected level ( fine if that's where their ability says they should be, but lots of children with ADHD are failing according to their ability), our LA doesn't give out statements for this level of difficulty. Ignore all of it and go with getting the support for your child. At the end of the day, you are the best advocate for your child.
Sharpen your elbows; you're going to need them.

Thank you Gremico....apologies only just seen your reply and thank you Annie yes indeed, I handed in my request for assessment on Thursday......today told by school better to WITHDRAW it (for now) because:- 1. the date for various copies to be submitted by them will fall on 9th August, i.e. right in the middle of the holidays 2. there is a new intervention starting in Sept for my daughter and the local authority will just say wait til xmas to see the result of that....however, it is for self-esteem from being previously thought of as naughty and nothing to do with getting her up to speed educationally 3. that they will support me on medical grounds, not on the fact that her grades are below par, and so it is better that I wait for the co-morbid diagnosis of bipolar disorder first to have more supporting evidence..... she has the ADHD diagnosis and is most definitely not reaching HER capability..............and no-one has tested her in anyway, no IQ test, no cognitive tests etc and yet the school always tell me she is extremely bright.....equally school reports say not doing what she is capable of?!! don't know what to do

What to do - ignore all of the school's good advice - it's bollocks!!
Put your request for a Statutory Assessment in. The LA have 6 weeks to let you know whether they are willing to carry out an assessment. If they say no, they will issue you with a Notice in Lieu and should also tell you, you have the right to apply to the Sendist Appeal ( you have to do this within 2 months of getting the NIL)
The school will be worried about not having done enough to support your child and therefore don't want you to apply for a SA. Once the LA receive your request they will write to the school asking them for evidence about how the school have supported your child at School Action/School Action+. Bet you a pound to a penny the school will not have been giving your child extra support, even though the LA delegate a specific amount of SEN money to schools for that purpose - it gets used for anyhing but SEN!
Plough on!! Believe it or not MUMSNET is a very useful site for getting advice about SEN. Click on Education, then go to special needs and that should take you to the link for the forum for "special needs talk"

Excerpt from head of govs letter... "As a small school which has to meet a number of SEN requirements, we take advice re cost effective interventions from ed psych and SPLD team . There and no funds or grants available if there is no statement of SEN." That was the answer I got when I asked why school were not using good quality interventions with my daughter. I have, over the years, become very cynical about the "help" school offer in terms of accessing quality, or bloody any, support for an ADD kids. I'm messaging you some info to outline what ive been doing lately, prob no different to your activities. Also tests to get done over the hols WISC - IV, WIAT II, CTOPP 2, YARC and TOWRE 2. These tests will clearly show if your daughter is academically achieving inline with her IQ ability. Concrete evidence for LEA, have put a link below with random, but hopefully relevant "down south" contact, best use one that advises on policy with your LEA. How far off her expected levels is she? How many levels/sub levels progress has she made in each year? Phone IPSEA to talk to an adviser, which is what ill be doing as soon as LEA refuse to assess. Hi all,
I ignored the school's advice to 'withdraw' the request for assessment......no idea what the current situation is yet, but if the local authority refuse I shall 100% be appealing
I am so glad I did too.....the last team around the child meeting before the end of term I mentioned was still revolving around gold stars?!?!?! ......... 3 years down the line.....unbelievable!
Gremico.....just wondering how you're doing with the school?

Great update re not withdrawing.. bad news this end...looks like school have not collated all D's results and therefore are now telling me via email that my request for all the assessment data is not possible to supply as the Head thinks "it is not appropriate". I replied thanks for your opinion but, to produce an informed report, erm, I actually do need the relevant info! I now need a EP to do end of year 3 SATS as Ive been advised to do this... just need one up here who is willing to challenge LEA LOL! x Hope all going in the right direction for you? x

Hi Gremico, it's all gone ominously quiet.....so really don't know what situation is...... have been looking into those tests you mentioned though....I am really frustrated that these haven't already been done in my daughter's case.....and long ago....they should be standard procedure in case of ADD/ADHD Your lot are just talking nonsense....they can't just not provide info.... for whatever reason....surely they've just got to get on with it?? I can't remember whether I said or not but someone I know was a few weeks ahead of me with this process....the council refused, she appealed, the council immediately relented I don't have any grey hairs yet, but I'm expecting a sudden burst anytime soon!
