Hi
I'm diagnosed / medicated adult with combined.
My son IS inattentive. But not diagnosed.
Primary school was shit for him. Telling us he couldn't concentrate and wouldn't start tasks but refuse to accept its anything other than day dreaming / lazy.
Each year teacher would suggest extra support, we would argue with head for the year, a few sessions would start then would start the battle again the next year.
They even said they think he is dyslexic but don't agree with labels!
After my late diagnosis I went to ask for a referral.
Their response - "no, he definitely hadn't got ADHD, if he had that he would be running around all the time" !!!
She then started to tell me what ADHD was.
I then lost my calm approach and told her what ADHD is and why I knew, getting too emotional!
My GP (who has been great for me) agreed to refer to CAMHS.
We had initial session with psychologist. My son, the bugger, was charming and calm, confident and attentive - never seen him like it!
We have had report saying they will not support him, or offer full assessment for two reasons;
1) they contacted school who said he is doing fine. (He did us proud in SATs but he is bright. But still has no friends, confidence, doesn't know what day it is, misses trips etc etc due to inability to organise). And therefore only impacting at home.
2) can't remember wording but basically didn't meet criteria of symptoms - then listed hyper activity only.
I'm in two minds as wife doesn't want him on meds so why get diagnosis?
But starting secondary school...scared! How will he organise himself??
Also, it's my inattentive that causes most problems, under achieving, depression etc - don't want him to have my life
Sorry not really sure what am asking.
