'lo all
Tried a search but couldn't find anything that directly answered my question, what physical or other tests might I expect should I be prescribed medication from a private consultation ? Blood pressure ? Pulse check ? Blood test ?
Has anyone had them done on the same consultation appointment or is this done on a secondary follow-up appointment (My initial assessment is only for an hour, follow ups are 30 mins)
Looks like some folk here have had to wait for a follow-up appointment before being prescribed medication ? Although it looks like these were NHS referrals ? Seems there isn't a hard and fast rule really, more case by case ?
Cheers
Stuey

Hi unohonchoI was diagnosed by a private Psychiatrist. The Psych gave me a letter to give to my GP asking him to prescribe the medication and perform blood pressure, blood tests and an ECG. It took 4 weeks and 3 appointments, one to discuss the diagnosis and hand over the letter to my GP, another with a nurse to actually do the ECG, bloods and blood pressure, then another to see the GP once the results were back, at which point he prescribed my medication.

Cheers Foggy
I had an inkling it wouldn't be as simple as him prescribing them on my initial visit, and that is dependent on his diagnosis too of course - He might send me away to meditate instead!

I know it's frustrating. I was desperate to see if meds would work for me.
I know you were only joking, but I'm also giving mindfulness and mindfulness meditation a go in conjunctions with meds!

If I knew meditating would be as effective as medication I'll gladly do it... The constant static in my head prevents this though, it never switches off
I was only in part joking about this, the last assessment I had ten years ago I was advised to engage a life coach and listen to relaxation tapes as I didn't have ADHD apparently... 10 years on and £30k worth of debt, a divorce and almost a 2nd divorce later and my concentration and focus worse than ever... The idiot was somewhat wide of the mark

Yeah, I think you're absolutely right. I don't think any amount of whale noises, meditation, exercise, good sleep, and healthy diet alone will have a dramatic effect. The way I look at it, I see medication as the primary treatment and all the other things help create the conditions the medication needs to do its thing. Harnessing the cumulative effect, if you like. I also tried to get treatment for ADHD 10 years ago. ADHD in adults wasn't even recognised by the NHS back then. My GP listened and was willing to refer me but couldn't find a psychiatrist that would assess for adult ADHD so that was the end of that for me. 10 years later, here I am in my early 40s, finally diagnosed. I could have been spared a traumatic 10 years. Now I've been diagnosed and have access to treatment, I have hope that things will get better. Best of luck to you

Yep, my appointment is this Saturday scatterbrain, I'm somewhat tense about it given the negative experience of my previous NHS assessment - Easier said than done to 'relax' right now Desperately want things to change...

Similar tale as you Foggy, I'm 41 this year... I've tried Vegan and Vegetarian diets instead of meat, intense exercise (Circuit training, boxing, long distance cycling, long distance swimming, running, triathlon) and can say that even when combined, diet and exercise have only benefited my physical fitness. A crappy diet probably affects normal people but my ability to focus/concentrate is just shit all of the time, good diet or bad Stuart

"Welcome to the club" I believe is the collective term ? As with @foggyboy I've got to have an ECG and blood tests before I can start Concerta. It is somewhat bittersweet, I feel like a weight has been lifted that I've finally been taken seriously but angry still at the NHS clown who dismissed it 10 years ago. A mountain has been climbed though
