You can contact your Member of Parliament for help with all matters that fall within the jurisdiction of Parliament or central governement. In England, we can't, for example, ask them to help us with council tax issues, or problems with local schools, but we can ask them to help resolve issues with the NHS. We can even ask them for advice. To that end, I am going to see my MP this Friday to ask him if he will support increased funding for adult adhd clinics, and to implement the recommendations of the new NICE guidelines that are due out this September. I'm also going to ask him to support changing the licensing on ADHD medications, and ask him to support funding for research into adult ADHD. Anyway, I urge everyone to do the same thing, remember it's the squeaking wheel that gets the grease. Anyway here is a link to a PDF that explains a bit more about what MPs can do: www.parliament.uk/documents/upload/m01.pdf

You could also try ICAS (the Independent Complaints Advocacy Service). It's a free service set up by the Government to help people who are having trouble with the NHS. When I approached my local ICAS, they were very willing to help and even offered to come to my home for a meeting.
Here's a list of ICAS contacts:
1. North East 0845 120 3732
2. Yorkshire and Humberside 0845 120 3734
3. North West 0845 120 3735
4. West Midlands 0845 120 3748
5. South West 0845 120 3782
6. London 0845 120 3784
7. Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire 0845 456 1082
8. Essex 0845 456 1083
9. Cambridge, Norfolk and Suffolk 0845 456 1084
10. South East 0845 600 8616
11. East Midlands 0845 650 0088

I saw my MP a couple of hours ago, and asked him to support increased funding for clinics, impletation of the new NICE guidelines, change in licensing regs for stimulant medication, and he was very receptive and supportive!!
He is going to write to the local PCT and Mental Health Trust on Monday, and after the guidelines are published, he will follow-up with the Department of Health, if necessary about changing the licensing for the meds.
I left a whole slew of documents with him to back up my position, so if anybody also wants to approach their own MP, I can send you my documents to use as a template.
The more MPs we can get involved in this, the better our chances will be that the guidelines will be fully implemented throughout England and Wales.

Hi, im new here,
Im writing to my MP Anne Main, as I think I might need her help to get the treatment I need.
my case is long and complicated and im upto 13 pages so far, but i started trying to get treatment for my dificulties back in 1995, but didnt even see anyone whod ever heard of adhd untill 1997.
Im taking the governments drive for "Efficient use of resources" as my main point to get her interested.
ive mentioned many other parliamentry points such as funding etc. the obvious difficultes etc. and cost to the nation, and a few others.
obviously I have untreated adhd and so it makes it specialy hard. and 13 pages is an absurd lenght for me to consider wirting, but I think ive got to include a lot or itl be no use.
i just hope shes not got the same problems as I have with long reads.
Ive got a few days to try make it a bit easier to digest, but my ICAS advocate is on holiday too !

This is a great thread. I am currently in the process of contacting my mp Louise Ellman.
Colin i am sorry to hear this has taken so long for you.
I eventually got a diagnosis 2 1/2 years ago but still no treatment. Am so sick of going round and round in cirlces courtesy of an extremely incompetent psychatrist & a PCT who doesn't officially recognise ADHD in people over 16.

thanks, yeah i kind of decided it was easier to give up 8 years ago cos hitting my head against a brick wall was starting to do my head in !
any idea how I can get this leter to good effect?
the thing I want to avoid is someone seeing oh adhd , and just dismising it, or just pasing it to the pct and asking them to investigate without any of the other info, lik hapened before, and they just said no theres nothing wrong.
so I have had to include everything, ive got the numbered summary points at the end, im hoples at writing leters, im not sure my advocate is gona be much help either, im so pissed of at wasting so much time asking people for help, and its just ends up a waste of time.
so like the saying goes if you want it done etc..
so idealy id like to sumarize it briefly in a few pages then expand the detail, but if i just put the sumary at the front it wouldnt make sense lol.
I am dead tired too, and 13 pages is virtualty imposible for me to read, the only thing is when i get so angry it just pours out kinda lol, that the only time i realy have any energy.
ive made a couple of pages of notes about other stuff too add, but im writing 2 leters at once cos they got a lot of detail the same, but ones to my new psychiatrist, explaining the problems with my notes, so i cant even copy and paste exactly cos i want the other letter to be as non hostile as possible, softly softly aproach first, wich given my mood is quite a contrast.

Well my MP is suposedly back from holiday today, and so is my ICAS advocate, unfortunatly my ICAS advocate just told me helping me to write to my MP is not in her remit so ive just sent the letter I wrote wich is 1.5 pages long. its a start at least.
it mentions a few points wich point out how big the problem is notionaly, but it also mentions I have about 13 pages of extra information wich is needed and that im not well enough to organise into something that is readable, and that ive been trying to get help with for some time but cant.

You've done well to get your letter down to 1.5 pages so I do hope your mp turns out to be supportive, Is Iscas going to help you draw up a letter to your psychiatrist or to the Mental health Trust?

well i got a reply from my mp already, shes writen to various people already, my PCT , and the health minister, but I had said i have lots of details that need to be included and I need help with sorting this out and this was just a very short letter to start with, so I dont know if shes just going to end up like the previous MP and just acept being fobbed off that theyve done everything properly.

I have just e-mailed my Mp, couldnt wait to post the letter. I am going to print a copy and take it to my gp on friday (think am gonna have to succumb to antidepressants as this business has been really driving me up the wall the last couple of months) but that is neither here nor there and i am just feeling sorry for myself!!!
love to you all in the same boat

ive not got a reply to my second letter to my mp yet, maybe its to much to expect a ccorepondance as such ?
anyway ive seen my private consultant whos confirmed I have adhd, cuerntly trying out doses of ritalin.

Good news you've got a dx an are trialling meds. Did the Consultant say how he was going to trial your meds until you and he felt you had reached the optimum dose?
You could write back to your MP explaining about the dx and how you are having to pay for the treatment, just so she is kept informed. I know it's all very frustrating but you have made progress albeit it's not quick enough!!!
ps are you taking the meds 3x day?

my trial of meds is single dose at 10am 2 days at 10mg increasing 10mg every 2 days to 60mg. he wants to find the point at wich i feel over agitated.
didnt have the energy to explain more before. im on 40mg today taken 2 hours ago and if anything i felt over calm not over agitated. my feet did stop fidgetting for about 20 mins.
its a real pain not having a dose to last the day as i found i got realy short tempered with silly little things yesterday evenring and started to feel more awake at 11pm.
I get to see him next week, im not sure if ritalin is going to be enough or dexedrine would be better wich i had beter suces with before, but i want him to be able to say he decided whats best rather than what i asked for lol.
as for the MP, well il just have to wait and see, i may get a reply yet, it was quite long letter, once i get a daily dose thats right then i will pull out al the stops to get it onto the nhs.
i dont want to pester my mp, but on the other hand it seems this day an age if you need something you often dont get it untill you pester people more than the next person.

Our MP is a pure waste of space. I am constantly sending him correspondence and he never replies until I publicly mentioned this in a newspaper article. I am sooooo sooooo positive he has ADHD and suggested he try and find a health service that would assess, diagnose and treat!!! What it has done is stimulated him into doing something a bit like the 'mystery shopper' just to get a better understanding as to the problems many ADHD adults experience in trying to access services--------the outcome will be of interest. If you go on the HANSARD website, search ADHD you will see everything that has been discussed in the House of Commons on ADHD www.parliament.uk/Honeyx

Just thought I'd post my letter in here in case anyone wants to use it as an outline.
Roland, any chance it could go in the Letter Templates thread??
