Do many of you find it's a family thing? I haven't been diagnosed anything but I'm going to get it looked into. This is all very new to me still. The other day when I was looking through symptoms I wondered if it was hereditary (you should see the state of ma's house, my god!) and then thought nah, pretty doubtful. Not long after that I found an article saying a lot of women in their 40s and 50s are recognising it in themselves as they discover more about it from their children getting diagnosed. Also I have a primary school aged little brother - the school is calling him a daydreamer, I'm thinking yeah I remember all that, here we go. He gets very frustrated by being called that (teacher calls him that to his face, nice eh) and insists he's thinking. He's not hyper or fidgety but the school are flagging up his processing abilities. Now with my Ma, I'm thinking it would make sense as well - house has always been a mess, so my messiness growing up kinda went unchecked. I can't speak for her mental state or what she would say about it though. It was only yesterday I got told about the school flagging up his processing abilities, and that they're hinting at ADD to my Ma, the same day I'd made a Dr's appt for myself to get it addressed. I wanted to blurt out oh my god I think that's what I have but thought it would sound a bit ridiculous after all this time, which it actually would haha.

I was diagnosed with adult ADHD at the end of last year. The hospital sent a letter that stated that it would be beneficial for me to take someone who knew me as a child. That way they could answer questions related to how I was in childhood. My father sat with me through this part of the diagnosis process and as we finished up, he said to the PN and me, "I must have ADHD" too". I looked at him with a wry smile and thought, Dad, ya see, I am not crazy and this is why I have struggled through a lot of my life. Was a very surreal moment in all honesty.

I think I remember that it is around 80% heritable.
I am one of those women who discovered my ADHD when my son got diagnosed. Finding out that you don't have to have been bouncing round the classroom was a lightbulb moment.
Looking at my father's checkered past leaves me in no doubt as to where I've inherited it from. His mother also sounds as if she had issues ...
It would be extremely unlikely for you to be the only person in your family with it.

I'm sure my whole family has it, mother, father, brother.
But each with a different flavour.
