my library fines used to be huge - much greater than the costs of the books it culminated in the occasion when the library staff rang to ask if they could collect the books from my house

I'm a bit of a pro when it comes to library fines. I remember when I was at uni (lasted a year) I took some books out over a holiday and there was something special about these books because the fine was about £80. Needless to say I banned myself from ever going to a library ever again. I can't be trusted!

I stopped using libraries because of fines, although more than once I got the fines waived.
I think I pulled the 'depressed and on benefits' card, but it might have been just that I was near, or possibly actually in, tears.
It was just as much the worrying about getting fined that made me stop as the fines themselves.
These days I only use the mobile library, and make sure I don't renew, except on the van.

It wouldn't have been so bad if I'd actually read more than just a couple of chapters of one of the books, the other book completely unread.
Not exactly value for money!
Given that I got fined the last time and the time before that and err, possibly the time before that, not sure, it might be worth reconsidering the whole library idea...
Not that second hand bookshops are much better either, while they tend to be great for fiction, less so for reference books.
And then there's the whole Hotel California thing too, books may come but they can never leave!
