After getting bitten by one of my pets last Sunday, resulting in a very small cut, three days later that finger started to swell up. The next day, Thursday, I felt I had to go into A&E as the finger was really badly swollen and quite painful. It looked like, if you can imagine, that blood was going into the finger but no blood was coming out again. The doctor decides that it's an infection so a nurse inserts a plastic needle thing into one of my veins, extracts a couple of specimens of blood, after which I feel like throwing up, before injecting antibiotics using an IV drip. I feel better after a while and go home.
I come back the next day for a second dose of antibiotics, into the needle thing which is still stuck in my hand from the previous night - it had been bandaged up to prevent it from moving - and am told by this receptionist to go to the minor injuries unit. She says something like: "go past here, turn right at the grey doors, and straight on". I do that, end up in the wrong department so come back and ask again. Instead of explaining the directions a bit more, she says pretty much the same thing as before: "go past here, turn right at the grey doors" etc. Not only has she just repeated what she said before, which clearly didn't help me, but this time she says it with a patronising tone of voice. I felt like saying, "you keep going on about grey doors, what bloody grey doors?!"
I didn't say a lot to her, but tried a different direction and found the unit.
There was a sign behind reception telling people not to swear at the staff, and I didn't, but I could really understand it if people did. It was just such an unhelpful, patronising attitude she had. She made me feel like an idiot.
It was Kingston A&E if anyone is interested, and yes, I've already emailed a complaint. Unfortunately, there were two female receptionists so they will both probably just say that it wasn't them.
I just wish I had said something at the time. I can't see any grey doors, they're all green!
