Hi, I was recently diagnosed by the NHS with ADD. I'm 54. I'm struggling to find out if there are state benefits I can apply for. The sites I've been to seem mostly to cover young children with ADHD.
Many thanks

Hi, My partner has just been diagnosed with adult ADHD and we have just begun the process of applying for various support benefits in the uk. We went to citizens advice and they said he would be entitled to PIP and support allowance. We are in Scotland which might make a difference, but I would definitely head to to citizens advice. They were very helpful, not only with directing us to find the right benefit categories, but also filling out the forms. I know it sounds like you might not need that help but despite me and my partner being perfectly intelligent, it actually really helped. The system really doesn't cater to someone suffering symptoms of ADHD. Obviously it differs from person to person but I'd say you have a good chance of getting financial help, which can only help. Good luck

Hi there.
Having ost ost my job I am suffering the inequities of the benefit system. If you are not working but have done so for the past year, I think you can claim contribution based ESA. This is not affected by any other income coming in to the house. There is also the Personal Independence Payment which replaces the disability living allowance. Students are entitled to additional support too.
Hope that helps

Many thanks I was finally diagnosed yesterday after years of being in the wilderness, I am also 54. Phone Employment Support Allowance (formally Sickness Benefit) on free phone 0800 055 66 88 and talk to them. If you are eligible they will then start your claim off with a 45 minute interview. Within a week you will need a sick note off your GP. I did this today and spoke to a very understanding reassuring person. The very best of luck

Thank you for this information. I will ring this number once I have my diagnosis. I hadn't seen this thread before writing my long post about how distressed I am after losing my job again and finding out I have this disorder.
I hope I will talk to nice reassuring people too.

Thank you gc7, I'll read through your diary and threads to get as much information as I can. I am currently struggling with depression and feel unable to work due to high levels of anxiety and stress after being dismissed several times in a row in the last few months. I definitely need some medical and financial help before I feel ready to work again. I hope I'll be eligible for ESA or PIP but how unfair indeed that our condition is invisible and we are likely not to be taken seriously! Thanks for your answer

Hi elodie 🙂 I read your original long post on my phone, but it seems to have gone. . I wanted to say that North Yorkshire has started to commission ADHD assessment from a private provider (Tuke Centre)in York and their waiting list isn't too bad. The CCG will only fund a limited amount of follow up appointments though. You could ask your GP for a referral.
