Hi. I'm new to all this as it's taken me literally over 40 years to get this far! I've never been diagnosed but I'm trying to sort it. I tried talking to the doctor a few months back and she just suggested getting a cleaner for my chaotic mess (I can't even get a job silly woman) and put it down to my having five children. Sigh. I had no children when I was one myself and I was still the same. Why do i think i have ADD? I procrastinate, lose things in my tiny house (like my keys back in July!), can't finish anything even tho I try so hard but my my goes into a paralysed whirly overdrive blank whenever I try to accomplish anything and I don't know where to start with stuff. If i can wash up, do a bit of washing and sweep the floor thats a successful day for me. Would love to chat to people who might get me because no one else does(sad face).

Hi addymama and welcome Have a read around and ask some questions if you like! There's some good advice about how to approach your GP . . a lot of people have had difficulties persuading their GP to refer them for ADHD assessment and pooling our experiences can help you find different approaches.

Hello Addymama
you sound like my twin! Lol. Im 52 and was diagnosed in August.
I lost my job this year just prior to diagnosis, so I am coming to terms with the implications of ADHD on my whole career. I think that problems at work were the catalyst for me badgering my GP. I had mentioned it previously but I was in such an emotional, state (classic adhd) that she referred for assessment. Once she referred the process and diagnosis happened quite quickly.
I think that one of the things I have realised, is that the level of distress associated with adhd problems, ie losing keys, memory problems, hyper-sensitivity is not mirrored by those without adhd. And am SO fed up with people saying to me 'oh, I think I have that,' folllowed by laughter. It is,distressing and there is a feeling that something is not quite right.
Btw, i had 4 children - interesting study potential re female add'ers and family size! I lost my job this year just prior to diagnosis, so I am coming to terms with the implications of ADHD on my whole career.

Thanks for your comments vagueandrandom. Hopefully I will have a good look around. It's certainly my intention to do so but I don't always get round to doing things . Will be very interesting to see everyone's tips about approaching the GP. It's good to know that we aren't alone jj11. I still haven't found those keys BTW. Hoping they turn up before the rental people find out as now I just have to bolt the back door from the inside. Last time I lost my (car)keys they were found sat on the back seat of my unlocked car for three days waiting for anyone to take them! My husband thinks I'm mad and that I make it up for attention so I know what you mean about people reactions. Other people who know me well work around me like invite us for dinner an hour early (my sister really did that, and laughed sigh.) It's hopefully a bit easier for younger people now as they are more likely to get diagnosed and helped at school. I'm doing a SEND helping in schools course at the moment and it's very interesting (even tho I'm way behind on the work and will probably have to pull two all nighters to get the work in cos when I'm motivated by the panic monster I can actually get stuff done!). I'm off now to start the potential female adders/family size study! Cool idea!
