Hi guys.
Today I got my GP to give me a reference to a specialist. He asked me a lot of personal questions about my past etc that I didn't want to answer but did, and he said that he would send a reference.
What can I expect now? do I wait for a phone call or a letter or something? He didn't explain at all and I don't know what to expect.
Thank you!
-Simon

Hi Simon foxsec Hopefully your GP has referred you for assessment for ADHD by a specialist. In an ideal world you should expect a letter or phone call confirming your referral with either an appointment date, or an estimated wait time followed by an appointment when one becomes available . . . HOWEVER . . .services vary depending on area . .some insist on a general psych assessment first to rule out anything else. Do you know if there's a specialist ADHD service in your area? A lot of NHS Trusts don't commission one, which is a whole other story. . If you could give us a rough area of the country, there may be someone on here who's had experience of your local service.

Hi vague, I live in Mansfield in Nottinghamshire. If there isn't one in the local area I'm going to assume there will be service available in Nottingham? Thank you for your reply -Simon

Hmmm. . . I've been having a Google on your behalf and it doesn't look like there's an adult ADHD service in either Nottingham or Nottinghamshire I could be wrong . .but I've looked at both Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG) and can't find anything. . .there's a support group in Nottingham www.nottinghamadultadhd.co.uk/who may be able to let you know the nearest service and referral process. I'm currently going through this and it makes me so angry! If I'm right and there's no service GP will have to apply to your CCG for an individual funding request (IFR) for you to see a specialist for assessment. All CCGs are different, but mine requires the GP to specify where you would like to go Sheffield shouldn't be too difficult for you to get to shsc.nhs.uk/service/sheffield-adult-autism-and-neurodevelopmental-service/HOWEVER . . . CCGs don't like IFRs because it takes 'their' (your) money out of their NHS Trusts, so don't always make it easy. . .

Ah, that sounds like a real pain. I hope everything can get sorted as I've been trying to get this sorted for a long time now. Thank you for your help, I will contact the notts support group.

Sorry for the double post.
Apparently there is one in nottingham "Adult ADHD Clinic at QMC Nottingham"
What is the process actually like when I go for my appointment? what can I expect? just is I dislike talking about myself in detail, makes me quite nervous.

Hi Simon foxsec I'm glad there's a service in Nottingham Unfortunately, the only way you can be assessed is to talk about yourself and be honest. There may be things that you don't want to admit to yourself. They'll ask you about about use of drugs and alcohol and risky behaviour. . this is to assess ADHD and NOT to rule you out for medication. It's useful to have school reports and for someone who knew you well as a child (usually a parent) to either fill in a reporting form, or come to the appointment with you and talk to the Dr. Different sevices have their own way of assessment, but there's no test for ADHD apart from talking in detail about very personal things. .it might help you to write some things down to take with you, or take along someone who knows you well.

Apparently there is a mental health department in the hospital near me. Got my referral on the 16th feb! I'm actually quite jealous. I had to get funding approved to go to Sheffield as when I was first referred I lived in Derby and since have moved to Notts. Wish I had known about the Nottingham service. It seems much quicker than the 2 years I have spent jumping through hoops.
