I just joined the site today and wish i found it a whole lot sooner. I have been hesitant to post but after reading through old posts i dont see the harm.
To save alot of time i think you all will know the typical back-story of debt, failed relationships and non existent social life. Im a 27 yeat old guy who never fit in and i have been at my local GP from 2007 reporting low mood, little sleep and anxiety. I was turned away on more than one occasion with open wounds from self harming and over the years i switched to drinking myself senseless,Im currently in homeless as my ex partner cant stand me and threw me out, i attended mental health appointments over the last 3 years but all i got was sent away with antipsychotic meds and told to see how it goes.
Even after a failed suicide attempt in december they still tell me i am not depressed and my mental health is fine and its being put down to behavioral.I was given no support besides a therapist who went well over a year without contacting me while i was still on meds. They point blank refuse to entertain the idea i could have adhd and told me "just to get on with it" so for years i didnt leave the house and my relationship collapsed and i struggled to be a dad, i have spoken to a private adhd specialist in gordon brown who says i need assessment asap but i cant afford it. Has anybody else had this trouble with the nhs? I had my GP turn me away, laugh at me, i was given antipsychotic meds and sent on my way and they messed me up, i was seen by mental health for less than an hour in 2016 and it all points to adhd. They even have me on adhd meds but say i dont have adhd(Atomoxetine)

Hi davydg9 It depends on your NHS area if you can get referred to local services. . . In your situation it might be better if there's no local services commissioned . . stick with me . . .if there's no local adult ADHD service you would need to get a clinician (not necessarily your GP) to apply to the Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) for an Individual Funding Request (IFR). In exceptional circumstances they can request funding for a specified private provider . .in your case, Gordon Brown, who seems to have a good reputation from reports on here. Exceptional circumstances you should get your referring clinician to flag are your homelessness, contact with MH services, self-harm and . .are you currently on atomoxotine? Who prescribes it? Can you get them to ask for IFR for private assessment? Can you try a different GP? Do you have any kind of support? From social services, homeless charities, MH team. . You can't request IFR yourself and they often don't look at anything sent by a patient.

I am in dumfries and galloway and the mh services are appalling, the mental health doctor i see has me still on atomoxetine but there is no follow ups or monitoring, along with the ato he was giving me anything and sending me on my way and not seeing me for 4 months.
I have never heard of the funding you mention but he wont put me forward for it, his words were i was to just get on with it when i was struggling to work and maintain a relationship with my family. They had me wait a year for an autism assessment but had me sit it on the medication and anything that suggested i was on the spectrum they dismissed with various excuses like unwilling to be assessed etc. Literally the only support i have received was when i went homeless i have a support worker and they referred me to drug and alcohol abuse teams aswell, but the atomoxetine does very little to my list of daily problems. I tried to change GPs and the doctors words were "i cant take you as he is my friend" meaning the GP i tried to leave, i tried an out of area GP but no such luck due to the area. Thank you for the reply btw, this forum is my last resort to finding some kind of help

I don't know how to link to posts on here, but if you go to Advocacy section. .Scotland. ."ADHD 22yo reluctant to diagnose"
they ended up taking an unorthodox approach in Edinburgh. . .now I know Edinburgh is a long way off,
but anything's worth a try. .?

I just finished reading the girls post and i can relate to alot of it, but as im in a different district im not sure how i can go about contacting the Edinburgh nhs? I really have no other options, like her letter i wrote a very detailed list of symptoms and examples from my own head i didnt lie about any and they just shoot it off. I was told alot points to adhd but a couple of things dont? I even took in a self assessment and letter from specialist gordon brown and they didnt say a word. That was in 2015. Atomoxetine does very little for me

Have you tried contacting this charity? www.addressingthebalance.co.uk/it's based in Edinburgh, but they may be able to offer some advice about the Scottish health system.

Contacting them didnt cross my mind, i will try tomorrow. I dont like approaching or even Calling people, gordon was the only person ive spoken to about it besides my local (useless) mh team, even the autism assessment was a sham

I have a long reply started on a different computer, suggesting a different course of action, (sleep problems dx/treatment) but haven't finished it. This is just a quick post to say, that I have had good reports of mh services in Glasgow, but not sure that's any more help than Edinburgh!
