Can anyone make a suggestion of the best and quickest route for diagnoses. I would really appreciate it.

Hi Mike @mickknox and welcome I've read your other posts too, so answer to all of them . . Sounds like you've probably got a good case for getting assessed for ADHD. So, how to get assessed/dx? . .quickest/easiest? Private, but it costs and if you decide to take meds meds it can be expensive and your GP doesn't have to take over prescribing (although they can) and you may not respond well or get benefit from meds . . not being negative, it's just something to be aware of. .meds can be really helpful. . NHS . .*IF* you have an adult ADHD service in your area, you can be referred via your GP. . waiting times vary from a couple of months to a couple of years. .there may not be an assessment service in your area which would mean that your GP would have to apply for an Individual Funding Request from your CCG to be seen out of area . .again . .waiting lists, or refusal of funding. . If you could give us an idea of your nearest city, maybe someone here has experience of services

Hi, I live in Salford, Manchester. I have no intentions of medicine at this point. Im only just learning how my mood swings happen. I have printed off a few papers from NICE ticked every question. With help from my wife, as I was reluctant to admit. I believe their is a adult ADHD specialist in Manchester.
I feel if I take medication it may effect my bright spells. I think its them spells that have ketp me allive over the years. Its been a tough few years to say the leat.
Thanks for your reply..
MiMike

Hi again . . this is when you need to find your answer to . . "and what do you hope to gain from a diagnosis? . ." particularly if you don't want to try meds . . I don't know if the Manchester service offers therapy/coaching, but for me, just having a dx has been incredibly helpful. It doesn't stop me from doing stupid things or getting frustrated by my inability to get stuff done, or the mood-swings . . BUT I understand myself better and accept that there are some things I'll always find difficult. I don't take meds as I didn't respond well to them, so I can't tell you if you'll lose your spark, although most meds don't stay in your system long, so you're back to 'normal' after a few hours. . I know what you mean about the bright moments . .I'd hate to be without the creative spurts of random thoughts, my 'overexcitability' and impulses which can be exciting as well as stupid . .it's easy to dwell on the negatives, but I love and embrace my differences

Hi Mike, We've got a list of NHS & private psychs on the website here It's my understanding that the Salford Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has commissioned an NHS adult ADHD service but I'm afraid that I don't know if there is a waiting list or how long it is. There is an adult ADHD support group in Manchester and if you contact them, they will probably have more details. And welcome to the forum

Thanks a lot for your help. I am honestly quite excited about understanding my brain and how it works.
My lows since discovering this have been none existent, or at least manageable. Im sure I will be on here learning and sharing much more over this journey in my life.
Thanks

I think the best, or possibly the only reason for diagnoses at the minute. Is to help with the process for my 7 year old son. He has just been reffered to CAMS so me figuring out exactly whats right, not wrong I like to put it, with me will help him.
For me, personally, I think I can get my head around this and embrace it. I have lived for a long time with this and just adjusted to life. Now I know why I check over everything about 10 times before I leave my house. Seem to still gorget something though haha

I've written many times before, that even just knowing you have adhd is a start because it can teduce the sheer amount of time spent wondering why on earth you did, or said, something! Which might help if prone to low self esteem, as I am. A sense of huour is a bloody great help too!
