Google Patent. www.google.co.uk/?tbm=pts&gws_rd=cr,ssl&ei=6KNLWdTSH8ykwAKUz4OQDw If this link doesn't work, just put Google Patent into search. It looks like a normal google search page, but if you put in something like 'Electric Wellington Boots to keep your feet warm' or something, then it shows all the patents that relate to that. This will help you find out if your idea is original. It can be disheartening if you find your idea already patented. However, remember, you can still have a patent if it has a significant difference in design. So, for example, your Electric Wellington Boots idea can still be patented it if they Change Colour when it rains or if they warn the wearer of incoming rain, but not if your design is just a different colour or material (if that material doesn't bring anything new to the table). You'd also have to show that how it does the 'feet warming' part differently from the other Electric Wellington Boot (they use chemicals, you use circuit boards or if you both use circuit boards, they warm the feet using different methods like warming water or warming the air).

In the UK, we also have design rights and registered designs, which might be appropriate for instances where an idea can't be patented: www.gov.uk/topic/intellectual-property/designsAssuming your idea doesn't infringe on someone else's patents or rights, though, I'd say that execution of your idea is more important than protecting it.
