I'm not taking any medication at the time and I am a personal assistant for a woman that I have worked for 12 years. One of my jobs is to drive her around and I can honestly say she is more patient she is more patient than anyone else but as far as my complete lack of sense of direction and my distractibility she constantly corrects me and instructs me with slight irritability in her voice. I never know where I am, I never know how to go places, I'm always making wrong turns, and she even talked to me about it. Lucky for me, she is a psychologist and knows about mental health. She said something like "I don't think you're a bad driver, but I think the way you process information is different and makes it difficult for you to look ahead and be aware of your surroundings". She suggested that I slow down and leave more space between the car in front of me. But this daily task part of my job provokes my anxiety and insecurity. I have grown accustomed to people making fun of my lack of direction. It's the joke people always say,.. "do you know where you are?".. "do you know where you're going?".. "do you know how to get back?".. I have tried many times to look at maps and study north south east west, many different ways; it just does not register. Like my mind refuses to process and understand direction. I think the reason for this is because my ADD keeps me so In my head with abscess of thoughts and Irelevant fixations on objects, that I am not aware of my surroundings to memorize directions. I am so tired of this and to me it's not a joke, it's frustrating. Does anyone else struggle with this?

I get lost in hotels. Any 'corporate' staircase I use, I can never remember if I should be turning left or right at the bottom. I use environmental markers to help me, where possible. I think it's part of 'the gift'

I welcome corrections or insights when driving. For example, 'There's a speed camera coming up shortly.'
Even if I've seen it myself this time, I might not next time so always appreciate it.
I absolutely would not tolerate irritation in someone's voice, though.
You may be dealing with too much anxiety atm? I can imagine that may be making life much more difficult than it should be?
Might be worth looking into that first.

I have quite good spatial awareness and can build up a 'map' of an area, but if I get lost in an unfamiliar area, without a really good map, I have to keep stopping to ask directions, because I can't remember more than one, or if I'm lucky, two directions. If I'm given a long string of directions, I have to stop them and get them to repeat the first couple and stop them then, or the later directions will confuse me on the first. Driving instructor type directions I can follow (usually), but if I'm left to my own devices, going somewhere slightly out the ordinary, I often forget and take the more familiar turnings out of habit.
If anxiety/stress levels are an issue, I agree with boost, it needs addressing.
I have my own method for dealing with stress/anxiety, but it's too difficult for some people, and so far hasn't helped with remembering where I'm going. ;P

Would a GPS system help? I find mine invaluable.
