Hi I will try and keep this short otherwise it will ramble and everyone’s eyes will swizzle. -I’d been diagnosed with CFS 18 years ago - This year at 52 desperate for help begging to see a psychiatrist as I felt there was something not right. GP said a psychiatrist will not help you with CFS even though I explained there was something I couldn’t put my finger on in my thoughts and behaviour. Was told to get out as he had told options -Massive crying, felt so alone, family was away, wanted to sleep and never wake up - wrote complaint letter. Saw a private psychiatrist - 3/4 sessions treating me for ADHD - was prescribed modnafinil but that was because I was self medicating with this drug before, it did work than had some extra stress not working at all so next appointment meds being sorted
The strange thing is my mother was interviewed by psychiatrist and saw that I never had this as a child..... but after discussing my problems with me and obviously getting it verified by my mother that what I say and do is accurate he is treating me for ADHD. Has anyone had a diagnosis later in life but not as a child? I’m overwhelmed by information and so gradually understanding what ADHD is all about. I never knew that I might have been living with this condition as I had been diagnosed with ME and been trying to cope and live with this but it all kinda makes sense now.

Hi! I was diagnosed at 48 and the majority of people on here we diagnosed as adults. It could be that your mother is ADHD and thinks you’re ‘normal’ or it could be that ADHD wasn’t recognised when we were children. . . my mum was a special needs teacher and says she just thought I was eccentric, creative, sensitive and enthusiastic. It’s difficult to describe exactly how ADHD affects you when it’s all you’ve ever known
