My 18 year old son has very Recently been diagnosed with ADHD and an immediate start on medication has been advised. The doctor has sent us information on both Methylphenidate (Ritalin) and Lixdexamfetamine (Elvanse) and - as this is all new to us-was wondering if I could ask for forum users’ thoughts and experiences of these medications. Thanks so much

Hi, I was wondering did you get much advice from your post? Also did he show many signs as a young child? My son got diagnosed very early. We are still working out medication for him as the one we tried made him made him worse so we took him off it. I would also love to hear from parent/parents who started the medication from a early age and did they continue or come of medication?? Also I was thinking don’t you think if someone as a adult has adhd and know they have it they should tell the person they meet ?? My ex boyfriend who I was with for a very long time was up and down and I was definitely one of those people who thought I could help him not even knowing he had ADHD. I didn’t even know what ADHD was until I had our son then it all made sense. I just thought he had he’s ways and that’s what I liked about him and I fell for him! He took me on he's rollercoaster world and completely drained me absolutely hard work. We still had a child together and my son is a mini him! Obviously my ex boyfriend parents knew and my partner knew he had ADHD why didn’t they tell me in the beginning. I believe you should tell a boyfriend or girlfriend if you have adhd if you know you have it. Anyway fast forward and my beautiful boy is full of beans very hype . He is only 7 and needs to do jobs. I’ve realised because he was so pushy with kids at school in the beginning that play dates have disappeared!! I do hope not all play dates have gone as that would not be good for him! Sometimes at the end of school I rush him to the car so he is not pulling or jumping next to a child which you need to remember all boys can be hype sometimes when they get together! I’ve noticed day to day changes and he is growing up a little I can see a positive difference. I really don’t want to sound negative because we do experience a lot of positives too definitely. Why isn’t they many groups where parents can meet up and relate just to have a mental break!! I’m going to start a meet up once Costa opens in the Solihull area for parents interested.

The medication really worries me too. My sisters friend told her about a genetic test which helps to prescribe the right medication. It’s big in America but they sell it in the uk too. The company is called myogenes. The test has really helped my nephew. Touch wood he’s on the right medication now and seems so much better. I wish we had known about the test sooner
