Hi,
I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experience going to their GP over a potential ADHD diagnosis over the past year and a bit and if so, how has it worked - has it all been over the phone, or have you had the initial conversation on the phone for them to then invite you into the surgery and discuss your concerns? I'm desperate to get started on seeking a diagnosis with the waiting list being as long as it can be, but I'm already worrying how I'd 'convince' a GP to refer me over the phone as there's so much to say/explain and it's all quite hard to put into words!
Also, from what I can tell, getting a diagnosis is a three-step process - going to the GP, who may then refer you to a community mental health team, who may then make the referral to an ADHD specialist. Is this correct and if so, has anyone had any recent experience with what the waiting times are between each stage? When people say there's a really long waiting list, I don't know what stage the waiting comes under and because I'm due to go away for a year in September as part of my uni degree, I'm wondering whether a GP would say it's not feasible for me to be put on a waiting list now, which is another thing that's putting me off! Having said that, I really am desperate at this point to find some answers and at least get the ball rolling, especially if the waiting list is as long as I've heard it can be.
Thanks in advance!
