Hi Everyone
I hope this finds you all well.
This post is my first, so it is doubling up as an introduction.
I am 37 and was made aware of ADHD after a family member received diagnosis earlier this year. Many of their symptoms seemed very familiar to me. I took an online test, spoke with my GP and I am currently awaiting assessment after being referred to specialists.
A big challenge for me has always been my working life.
I am easily distracted, often zone in and out of concentration and forget or miss crucial information. I struggle to maintain focus, particularly on things that don't hold my interest and my energy levels fluctuate throughout the day. I try very hard to compensate for this, and always give 100% but it often leaves me worn out.
I find dealing with many different characters exhausting, I am particularly poor at communicating with difficult or confrontational people. In such situations it is as though my mind goes completely blank and I am unable to defend my position or construct decent counter arguments until some time after the conflict has deescalated, by which time it has become irrelevant.
I become hung up and focus on negative aspects of the job, and at that point it is only a matter of time before I become overwhelmed and have to leave. My work experience lies within manufacturing, engineering and architecture. And I have held both hands on and management positions.
Yet, I have never been able to settle into any job.
I would be interested to hear from anyone who faces the same challenges and how you manage it ?
Many thanks in advance
Dave
