Hello,
I’m new here. Am looking for some advice and help please. I had assessments completed when I was a child which stated I was highly likely to have ADHD and Asperger. However they wanted to start me on meds. My mother didn’t agree so stopped taking me fast forward 10 years, I have always struggled with symptoms but have been able to find coping mechanisms. About 5 years ago my dad died rather suddenly. Since then things have got worse and worse. I have seen an exacerbation of symptoms main / worst ones are my anxiety (which causes high heart rate and palpitations), panic attacks, quite severe depression, I struggle with massive mood swings and am very OCD.
I went to my doctors a few months ago and they started me on citalopram for depression and beta blockers for my heart rate. It masked symptoms a lil but now right back to where I was. I have asked for a referral for ADHD diagnosis but he said we will see in the future and that’s what he keeps saying everytime. I also suffer with suicidal thoughts (at times) and self harm. I had preliminary tests in Cardiff and was booked for assessment but because I moved as I graduated from university I need re referral. I can’t carry on the way I am. The waiting time for a GP appt is 5 weeks at my surgery and then it’s over the phone due to covid. I am not getting the support, it took everything I had to go to my GP and ask for help. I am a very proud person and do not like seeking help. (Probably as I’m also a nurse). And have been pretty disgusted by the way I have been treated. I don’t know anyone else with ADHD so I can’t get any advice and I’m scared of what’s coming in the future if I don’t get help.
Thanks in advance Jake

Hi Jake, That sounds really hard. Have you asked your doctor why they won’t act now on the ADHD stuff, and only seem to talk about maybe doing it in the future? The first step would be to fill out a questionnaire with boxes to rate how much you agree with certain statements on a scale of 1-10 or something. As far as I understand, it’s a standardised test, and it’s also available to look up on the internet. Maybe find it and complete it to get a step ahead and to have some data to point to, and then ask your GP to look at it and refer you for testing by a specialist organisation on that basis? You’re allowed to select which organisation to be referred to under the NHS “Right to Choose” rules (look these up) so you can try to pick the one with the shortest waiting times… Good luck!!
