Hello all,
My son is currently on half term from school, and is meeting up with friends online. They talk while they play a game.
He struggles to be with more than one friend at a time, both physically and online. If there are more than one he tends to try and control the situation, hes quite bossy but also seems to thrive in this situation. His friends enjoy the games he makes up and never seem to be bored by them.
I have noticed recently that he becomes really distressed when he is 'ignored'. This could literally be that someone is talking to someone other than him. He does this to his father and I all the time. He interrupts, talks over, gets angry about not having attention on him immediately. So last night he was online for an hour or so with a friend, this friend suddenly stopped responding and there was no sign of movement. I.e. they had left the screen, lost connecition or were distracted. I feel the normal reaction to this would be that clearly they have lost connection or are busy, and to wait for a moment.
He started panicking that this friend was offline, that they didn't want to be his friend anymore. He was crying, screaming, he gets aggressive towards himself in terms of hitting himself in the leg, pulling at his hair. He punches at the wall. When he gets in touch with the friend again, he gets very upset, asking why they were not talking etc.
Is this something typical of ADHD? My husband is autistic which we discovered after 10 years of marriage. It was clear since we met that he was autistic but he never wanted to address it. My son does show similar signs as my husband but the over reactive emotions to things seem to be specific to him. We are still waiting to be seen by a specialist as I feel he needs some form of medication to help him. It is awful to see him to oversensitive to literally everything.
He can't even eat a meal without being sat with and reminded to keep eating. He can't focus on anything for more than a minute at most.
